Looking for new reel...

Featured Replies

I'm looking for a spinning reel to put on my 7' MH/fast  All Star Rod. I want to use this as my frog/flipping rod.

High speed would be nice  and I would like a front drag. Unsure about the rest. I guess that is why I'm asking for help.

Price is also a concern. Under $60 would be great, under $100 might be workable.

I had been looking at the Penn Captiva(CV4000). It's under $60 but the reviews I have read are 50/50(some love it, some hate it)

I haven't been fishing that long and haven't used that many reels. Just wanted to ask you guys/gals for suggestions/opinions.

Thats a bit of an unusual frog/flipping set up. But here are some recommendations.

Daiwa exceler -$60 aluminum body and 31" per turn in the 3000 size

Shimano symetre 31" per turn $80 aluminum body

Those two satisfy your requests for price fast line pick up and both feature metal bodys which are highly recommended for fishing around heavy cover.

The similar offering from quantum is the kinetic pti but it does not feature as fast a retrieve speedlike you requested. Pfluegers similar offering is the medalist but I couldn't find their inches per turn on the BPS site.

For that price range ( you are not going to find something interesting under $60 even though the Shimano Sedona is not a bad reel ) I don 't think you can beat the Shimano Sahara for $60 or the Daiwa Exceler.

Thanks guys,

Wife's got the Bait Monkey in a wheelchair :'(

So I'm trying to match a reel with a rod I already have.

I'm new to spinning gear for Bass (always used BC's). I don't use it for what you are talking about, but I have the Symetre mounted on a 6' MH rod and really like it !! Haven't been using it long enough to comment on how it will hold on the long run. They haven't changed it in a number of years and everyone on this forum who owns Shimanos speak highly of it. You sound like your buget for gear is somewhere around mine, for the money I don't think you can beat it.....

Shimano Symetre, $80.

big fan of the Symetre. Have the 750 version on an ultra light setup.  tough reel for the bucks.

Thanks guys,

The 7' MH/fast rod and Symetre sounds like a good set up. I know its not a perfect frog/fliping set up, but I think it will work for now. It will be the best outfit I have for this purpose. I'm still learning so the rods I have are multi-purpose. Maybe one day I'll have a rod for every presentation. I'll keep my fingers crossed  :o

I have a 7 ft. Shimano Clarus mounted with a 4000 series Symtre. It is about five years old and has served me well. I have caught redfish here along the coast in Se North Carolina and it has never given me any trouble. Reel is still smooth, it might would be even smoother if I would send it to Reel Mech for some cleaning and such. I hate to part with it, however I have some new reels to use in its place so I am starting to see a road trip in its future.

For any thing OTHER than frog fishing and or/ braided line I would recomend the Pflueger presidant ($60), but they have graphite frames and would not be a good choice for that, I use mine only on 8lb line for weightless soft plastics. I am with Dodgeguy, step up to the Medalist, I recently bought one, and while I have yet to use it, I feel more confident tossing bigger baits w/braided line on a metal framed reel. Don't get me wrong, I LOVE my Presidant's, but for some things it just aint right for. They one thing I do not like about the Medalist so far as in the 35 size it is heavier than the Presidant in the same size, but I will trade off the weight for the "backbone" of the metal frame. Another good metal frame reel I have is the Daiwa Procyon 2500 (same as the Laguna) they also sell for about $60, and is lighter than the Medalist, but that series of reels has been replaced bythe Excellor, which I am sure will be a great reel. My Medalist rest's on a 6'6" MH BPS Bionic blade w/10 lb braid, I am thinking it will be a great spinning combo for jigs/worms in tight spots ( I know the rod is great for that as I have had it for a few years now).

My wife uses a GL3 rod with a shimano 2500 symetre reel and she loves it. She uses this when she fishes a horny toad and has never had any problems. Give a symetre a try.
