Uni Knot is amazing

For terminal tackle, I’m about 95% an Improved Clinch and 5% Palomar guy, and 100% Lefty Kreh leader for braid-to-leader. They work and are easy-peasy to tie.

I used to use it alongside the double Uni for leader knots and had way too many failures. For all my non-braid lure connection knots I use the san diego jam.

I have a few knots in my arsenal but I generally tie a uni. If I rig a drop shot, then it is a palomar.

I don't tie leaders. The only line to line knot I tie is for backing. I tie a uni to the spool and a uni to uni for the backing.

A few things I like about the uni knot that doesn't get mentioned. Once you start the knot it doesn't come apart, it works for everything line to line, spool, and terminal, and the way the knot finishes. I think some knots finish horribly. The Palomar is a good example, it just doesn't finish as clean as other knots.

With the uni, you pull the tag end and get the knot about 80% then finish by pulling the main line. I can do it in the dark, finishes perfect just about every time.

This is why I use it.  Its easy and works.  There is no jamming a loop of line through hook eye or trying to feed line through it twice.  There is no passing of the bait through a loop of the line trying to avoid trebble hooks and hardware.  I can tie it practically one handed while getting slammed by wakes in a kayak or in low light.  It's just an easy strong knot.  I retie frequently and can't remember the last time I had a breakoff fighting a fish or on a hookset.  Its been 10+ years and it was before I switched to the uni.  I'll go all day on mono but I cut and retie with fluoro every few fish with the uni and my breakoffs went away never to return.

It would be interesting to have a chart listing the same knot various names! Uni and Duncan are the same knot.

Nylon and Nylon copolymer mono line of equal diameter can achieve 100% knot strength* with several knots tied properly.

Fluorocarbon line of the same diameter difficult to achieve 90% knot strength and the reason we have so many types of knots teeing to overcome lower knot strength per diameter then mono line.

For whatever reason we settle on a knot that is reliable for each angler.

I settled on the Palomar knot for hooks and snaps. San Diego jam knot for lures and jigs. Alberto knot for braid to mono or FC leader. Rarely tie braid direct to lures with hollow body frogs the exception and use the old braid knot (double line clinch).

Line bait is perfection loop knot.

* includes impact strength “hook setting”.

I use the uni knot for a connection to my lure.

I used to use the double uni knot for a Braid to leader connection, but it was nothing but trouble for me. Especially on a bait caster setup. My personal opinion is that the connector knot is too thick and it gets severely weakened through micro guides. I switched to the Alberto knot and my issues stopped, except the Alberto is a little bit harder to tie on the water.

I only use and know 4 fishing knots.

Palomar - braid

Double pitzen - fluoro

Improved clinch - mono

FG - braid to leader

When I was younger all I did was throw mono so the improved clinch was the only knot I knew. Don't think it ever failed me.

And not lubricated with a little spit before being snugged up.

Trilene was go to for a long time, but I've been using more lures with split rings and the slight gap where the line sits leaves it just loose enough to wiggle free sometimes.

Sandie jam is my new jam, double pitzen in cleaner water and not bottom contact.

Braid gets uni, simple efficient and reliable
