How far can you pitch?

Featured Replies

I am working on pitching in the yard. Right now I can hit a target about 12" at around 40'-45'.

I have a stump in the yard and I try to land a spinnerbait on top of the stump, both pitching, and roll casting, and it's at about 30'. Much harder than it sounds. I get it occasionally. Sometimes I throw to the base of the stump.

What should I aspire to?

whatever your lakes and fish require. I know that’s not terribly helpful but it’s the truth. If you’re fishing thicker cover you might only need to pitch 20’ most of the time but you have to hit an egg sized hole in the pads. If you’re fishing laydowns you might only have to hit a serving platter and let the bait slide down the trunk.

growing up we had a telephone pole in the yard that was about 50’ from the sidewalk.  I’d pitch a jig for hours at times just to hit the base of the pole.  That’s useful for getting the motion down and learning. But more important for fishing is being able to hit a variable distance the first time casting to it.

I can pitch about 40-50 feet depending on the weight of the bait, line and rod. A 1/2oz to 3/4oz jig with trailer seems to be my sweet spot but I can roll cast twice that far.  As far as distance and accuracy goes, that 40-50 feet is all I really need to get the job done.

Distance is secondary to accuracy.
I’d be practicing where to put it than how far I can make it fly.

Sure, there are times where a longer than usual pitch is needed but once you get past your individual “sweet spot” of your average most accurate distance then you’re just guessing and hoping.
Thats where an easy underhanded lob cast comes in.

Pitching is a system where if you can get everything dialed in, distance with accuracy will come.
When I switched to 8 carrier Seaguar Smackdown from Power Pro I actually got another 5 ft or so without sacrificing anything.
Same when I changed to 12# flouro from 16# on my new Okuma Cerros/Haikai DT combo.

Throw in the variables like different weights and wind, your distance will come without sacrificing what’s more important.

i can hit a manhole cover in my culdesac from about 50 feet.   on water, standing in my kayak, all bets are off.   30 feet, in "that" direction is pretty good.

off a bass boat, i dont embarrass myself.

Dont be surprised to hear all kinds of crazy distances.  After a little bit of guiding, particularly waterfowl, I've learned that about 7 of 10 people would perish if they're life depended on a quick and accurate estimate of distance.  For whatever reason people really struggle with 40 yards.

Even when I was still pitching in high school, I could cast about as accurately as I could throw.  Pitching a bait is a little different, especially today.  If my eyes were better, I would be more effective pitching a bait over 50', but my accuracy and ability to land the bait quietly at 50' isn't great, it really falls off after that distance.  Usually, I can get within 35' of a fish without spooking it, at that distance I can put my bait in an area a little bigger than a softball.

I put a little more importance on knowing the behavior of the fish and its orientation in the cover.  It doesn't matter how accurate you are if you don't know where the fish is or which way he's facing.  I guess FFS is a great tool to solve that problem.

Usually gar enough and accurate enough.   What I will be working in this year is skipping.  I get a little excited when I see a great skipping pitch.  Except when I attempt it...no excitement....just frustration.  That's going to change

Interesting comments. I am working on skipping. Man, I don't see how folks skip while pitching.
