Soft Plastic Making Tips

Featured Replies

I am 15 years old and am looking to start a fishing lure business. My big margin between competitors will be the ability to customize the color of their soft plastics and the glitter. The first 3 molds I am purchasing are a 3.2 inch Injection mold paddletail from AnglingAI. The other 2 are a bandito bug plastic mold and a 4 cavity senko mold. I was going to buy the medium solution for the baits and had some questions on if I need a respirator, and tips on the best colorants and glitter for my baits.

A respitator is not a bad idea for your age but that is not all you need.  Do you have the necessary stuff to make plastics?

Welcome young man to BR.

Your questions are better answered in the Tackle Making forum.

Most if not all custom soft plastic lure makers offer specialty colors and flake combinations per minimum order quantity.
To start up a small business making custom soft plastics consider contacting a mom & pop bass fishing tackle shop to develop a name for yourself.

Factor in the cost of molds, materials, packaging and shipping.

Good luck,

Tom

Howdy and welcome.

I cast bullets, which of course is lead alloy. The same basics apply to all aluminum moulds. Treat them well. Make every effort to not drop them, or ding the interior against anything including the other mould half. Keep the halves together with a rubberband when not in use.

Don't use a steel object to scrape or pick at the cavities. If you have any stuck matter in the cavities, a nylon brush or a wooden skewer is the best tools.

I have all the basics but I am wondering if I need a vacuum chamber

It’s good to have. Once you introduce moisture into the plastisol, you can get air bubble. I use Bait Plastics 242 mostly and it’s fairly bubble free.
