What lb test straight fluorocarbon on baitcaster for whacky

Featured Replies

5-6 inch senko.

I typically fish braid to 16-18lb leader in Ontario lakes with lots of milfoil. I was considering keeping a spare spool for straight 10-12lb fluorocarbon to use at times when the bite gets tough. This is all on casting gear.

the rod id use the 10-12lb is an old kistler 69mh that is pretty parabolic and an alphas sv tw. Do you think its worth having the light straight fluorocarbon and if so what like would you recommend? Can 10lb work on a casting reel?

12# Sniper is what I use.  You could bump it up to 14 if you like.  I typically run 10# on a ML, 12# on a M and 14# on a MH.  It's not rocket science but it works.

I'll add that I use straight Sniper because I cut and retie frequently and this makes line consumption an issue when using braid to a fluoro leader.  When using a leader I prefer Big Game mono.  I also don't trust fluoro as a leader.  Casting and hook setting beats up fluoro at the knot and I feel like a leader is getting even more beat up due to the short amount of line in the leader.  With the high elasticity of Big Game that leader can act like a rubber band stretching on every cast and hookset all day and that won't harm it one bit.

For milfoil or really any other emergent grasses it depends on how thick and what you’re trying to do.

For light to moderate I use 12# or 14# Sunline Sniper
For moderate to heavy including punching I use 20# Shooter with a spool of 25# in reserve.

Anything other than that I use straight braid 65#-80#

12lb Sniper is my choice.

The advantage of braid with weightless Senko’s is the braid floats and acts as a strike indicator, plus it cuts through milfoil. FC line sinks and will be invisible to see as a strike indicator.

It’s my personal belief bass anglers in general use line far stronger than needed to control bass to land them.

10 lb or 12 lb mono line floats and strong enough to control any bass you will hook. Suggest using a line color you can see easily using Senko’s.

What ever you have the most confidence using.  I have 8, 10, 12, and 15# spooled up.  They all work fine on my bc reels.
