Spool Play on 22 Bantam

Featured Replies

Hi all, I have a 22 bantam that I have used pretty lightly for about 2 months, and I have discovered some spool play back and forth on it. When the handle locked in place, the spool will wobble about a quarter of an inch back and forth. This causes all kinds of rattling sounds when reeling hard, and is really annoying. I didn't notice this when the reel was brand new. What could this be? Thanks!

Have you adjusted the spool tensioner knob

That's what takes out the play your describing.

Welcome, we have a forum for this type of question.

Spool end play side to side shouldn’t be more then 1/16” or the thickness of a penny, 1/4 is way to much for any bait casting reel.

Your reel has a knob to adjust spool tension*. The basic method is with the lure you plan to use adjust the knob until the lure start to fall on it’s own weight. The fine adjustment is the reel spool should stop turning when the lure hits the ground. About a 1/8 knob turn looser the spool is in free spin and could backlash without proper break adjusts it light touch using your thumb.

Tom

* you may have lost the knob!

It is not side to side, it is forward and back.

It is not side to side, it is forward and back. I have the spool tension set to just have a tiny bit of side to side play

Broken spool!

Sounds like either the spool spindle or a bearing is broken.  I’d get in touch with shimano for warranty replacement.

I have had this issue on my curado 300 as well as slx 70, do you think all of them were broken?

I highly doubt that you got 3 broken spools from the factory.  I’d doubt one but that’s what it sounded like.  If you have three doing the same thing then I’m inclined to believe either something else is wrong and it is user induced.

Spool can’t move fore and aft as the reel frame and spool shaft prevent it.

The only thing I can think of is loose braid line moving.

peace,

Tom

I kept watching it in full screen, clicking back to the start multiple times. I don't see the spool moving forward and back within the frame - I see it slightly turning back and forth within the shaft guides (bearings or bearing/bushing) - which is totally normal....even my Tatulas and Patriarchs do that.

Yeah that back and forth with the spool was my only concern. It is very clunky when I reel hard, and I do that a lot when chopping swimbaits.

yeah, the spool itself isn’t moving forward and back.  it is rotating on its axis which means the spindle and bearings aren’t broken.  I think what you’re seeing is a combination of the play in the anti reverse baring plus braid slippage on the spool. Back in the day before infinite anti reverse bearings, spools would rotate even more than that just on their own before the anti reverse would pick up.

is there any way to mitigate the anti reverse bearing? I don't think its the braid slippage because I have a taped down and I am rocking the spool lightly.

If that’s what it is, it shouldn’t do that.  That would be a warranty replacement/fix.  It is weird that you have three all doing the same thing though.  I’m not easy on my reels and I’ve never broken an ARB before.  And a Bantam is a hefty built reel.

When I try to reel backwards, the reel doesn't feel very tight and the spool will have a clunking sound. Do you think that is the ARB? There is also a whining noise when I reel without eh spool in

First, don’t reel without the spool.  Second, yes if you’re able to reel backwards then it sounds like the ARB is broken.

Why are you trying to reel backwards?

No.  Just the combined slop in the pinion yoke/spool pin and anti reverse bearing.  It's normal.  Daiwa's have a little less anti reverse slop than Shimanos but they still have the same spool pin to pinion yoke slop.

Any rattling/clicking from the spool pin chattering in the pinon yoke when reeling aggressively on the water will be practically indiscernible from the ambient noises present when fishing.  This is a product of normal reel operation, good hearing (I too am cursed with this) and messing with the reel indoors without a bait on the line to press the spool pin into the pinion yoke.  I can only really pick up the chattering on the water when burning in a low resistance bait like a weightless plastic for another skip.  It's just a soft chatter from the reel as I rappidly crank the handle

All my eleven Shimano reels are all doing the same thing, just like in the video so I guess that's normal, reeling backward isn't normal though. You'll need to send it in if it's in fact the ARB, you'll need a special tool to replace it because it is press fitted in the handle side plate, I did replace one before, damaged the ARB in the process and it was a PITA!

Left-handed Shimano reels use the same ARB as the right-handed so the ARB plastic sleeve is exposed through the hole of the handle side plate under the handle shaft bearing, and you can damage it pretty easily cause the metal side of the ARB you'll need to lightly hammer it out of the side plate is facing inside the reel.
