Bad spool of line?

Featured Replies

I put 30 pound Sufix 832 on a spinning reel this spring. It’s the reel I primarily use for skipping plastics under docks.

Three times now this season, I have reached into the rod locker and found this line to be completely snapped. I re tie and use it for a while without an issue.

I inspected the guides and did not find any issues. I’ve never had an issue with Sufix braid in the past.

Is it possible I simply got a bad spool of it this spring?

Am I understanding this correct?

You fish with the rod, at the end of the day you put it away in your rod locker.

The next time you go fishing you get the rod out and the line is broke?

That's pretty crazy and makes no sense.

^^. I'm with that person.

nothing but question marks for me.   odd

Odd. Check the line roller in the reel. Might be a long shot but if its snapping and you pulling you line tight with a lure on, its another point of pressure on the line.

And yes, it could be a bad spool.

Gremlins.

Bad spools happen. Not as often as people claim, but it's possible.

I'm 100% positive what I would do and that's just toss the whole dang thing. The line that is.

Fishing line is "cheap" compared to everything else.

I wouldn't want to risk breaking off a PB or anything really nice on it.

Yes, that’s exactly what occurred, several times.

Luckily I am mostly done skipping plastics under docks for the season so it’s not a big deal anymore.

I inspected the rod and reel again closely and could not find any damage. I am guessing a bad spool of line.

In all my years fishing, I think I got one bad spool of line. It was Trilene XL, 8lb test. I have heard of guys getting bad spools, so I do think it's possible. It's aggravating, but I think all we can do is respond with fresh line.

I was told a long time ago to always pull double the rod length of braid off and retie after pulling it out of the locker. Supposedly the vibrations of the boat/travel cause it to get microscopic weak spots where it rubs against guides or the level wind.

My thought is that line has to be rubbing something sharp when it’s in the rod locker. Braid isn’t great with abrasion so it might snap so that would make sense.

832 is a durable line, even its lighter iterations.  I used #30 832 on a bridge jigging outfit.  It held up to 20lb+ stripers dragging it against barnacle covered concrete pilings.  Every now and then it would sustain enough damage 10 or 20 yards into the spool to warrant cutting it, but not very often.

Out of the hundred of spools Ive had only 2 that I truly think were defective, not counting Stren as Stren should be a synonym for consistently inconsistent.  1 was a spool of Vanish leader material that had abrasions every 8-10' making it worthless.  The other spool was 12lb InvizX from BPS, that was failing at 6-8lbs right off the spool.

I would think defective spools of braid would be less likely, but not impossible.  The issue is once your confidence in the line is shaken, you're expecting it to fail.  At that point its better to respool with something you have confidence in.

I've used Sufix 832 for about 10 years now.  I wouldn't say I'm hundreds of spools in, but I'm probably dozens.  I've never encountered an issue.

I'll be using it again.  One bad spool out of dozens is not enough to deter me.

Is the rod going into a tube in the rod locker? If so do you always put back in the same spot. I can’t believe that 30lb braid is breaking like that not under tension.

It goes in a rod locker (in a tube) when it's not in use.  I don't always use the same location though.  I have not experienced any other issues with line on other setups that are also stored in this rod locker.
