7'3" Heavy Fast Rod?

Featured Replies

  • Super User

I have a BPS Crankin' Stick in 7'3' H/F. What is a rod of this power, action, and length suited for?

I use it for crankbaits in heavy current at the river primarily. I have also used it for frogs in slop and carolina rigs, and for flipping and pitching from shore.

Is there anything else that it would excel at?

I have that same rod and my thought process for buying it was/is throwing heavier 1/2-3/4 oz chatter baits and spinner baits. I say was as I don’t really throw anything that heavy generally speaking but I have and it was more than capable. I also threw the 110 sized whopper plopper on it and it handled that perfectly as well. Hope this helps a little bit.

That rod is quite a bit too stiff for crankbaits. For crankbaits, you will want something between medium and heavy with a moderate or maybe moderate fast tip, with the exception being a M/F rod which typically makes a great squarebill rod (especially in grass).

H/F rods are usually good for frogs (with braid), and jigs or Texas rigs in cover, punching setups and heavier spinnerbaits or chatterbaits.

Ditto

I don’t know why any rod would be labeled H/F for cranks unless BPS is way off on their power designation to what most consider heavy.

I'd use it for 1/2 oz to 2oz trebble hook and single hook moving baits on 15# Big Game.  Buzzbaits, chatterbaits, spinnerbaits, ploppers and other big topwaters, cull shad, nessie, lipless ripped out of grass and L bill crankbaits in the 3/4 to 1 oz range.  If it can really handle 2oz well then I'd toss a big wake bait and some Savage Gear baits up to and a bit over 2 oz like the shine glide and 3d bluegill.  Basically use it as a big moving bait rod.

That is a perfect rod for chasing deep fish.

Deep cranks (8XD, 10XD, DD22, etc) flutter spoons, big tail spinners (shh!! It’s a secret!!), I’d also use that for dropping swim jigs off in deep water.

Thanks all. I appreciate the input. Sort of what I was thinking.

Since getting it, I've found more uses for it than I'd thought I would.

It's their cranking stick it says fast but it's a blended shaft so they guys saying it's too fast don't understand the meaning of that line of rods.    I had their 7 11 heavy fast it was an amazing big squarebill and deep diving rod

@Bazoo I have a 7’ H/F BPS ( Ricky Clunn ) I believe.

I use it for pitching, flipping and frogging. It works well for what I use it for, never tried any crank baits with it.

The one I have, I use for crankbaits when I'm at the river fishing the white water. I've caught a carp and goodly sized gar on it. The gar was about 15 pounds I guessed by picking it up, but didn't weight it.

That rod handles it beautifully, and I was glad It was that rod I got those on.

It handles the heavy current really good though and I feel like I have control over my crankbait.

I understand, if I fish currents with my med/ hwy-fast, I feel my rod is already partially loaded so to speak. So I like a heavier rod, this might not be the right way but it’s what I like.
Due to having a small boat or bank fishing, my need to be multi uses. Fish currents one day, pitching in heavy cover the next time. It’s budget friendly too.

100 %. The way BPS labels that series is strange but It´s designed to be a big crankbait rod.

This looks a lot like the Dobyns 736cb glass spec wise (hybrid blank, fast action). Based on that I'd say bladed jigs and 1oz crankbaits like a 6xd.

I have more than one crankbait rod that says 'Fast' on it.  Crankin' Stick MLF, 704CB Glass MHF, HMG CB MF, Custom Pro Speed Stick MF.  Not all crankbait rods say Medium, Moderate, Mod-Fast, or Medium-Fast, etc.
