$100+ Spinning Reels

Featured Replies

I've got a Shimano Stratic and a few Diawa Capricorns, but I've been looking to try a different brand.

I recently saw the new Pflueger Supreme spinning reel and was wondering if anyone here has tried it?  Below is a picture of it.

Does anyone have any suggestions for a similarly priced spinning reel - not made by Diawa or Shimano?

Hey Gobble This is the first year it is out,  it has a Magnesium Frame I'm hooked on thier Presidents.

Magnesium Frame? Most reels are made from aluminum or graphite frame. Is magnesium better?  :-?

Magnesium is strong and much lighter. The supreme is only 8 ozs. It is the lightest spinning reel I have ever handled. I see a couple in my future....................Al

What is the cost on one of those?  Nice looking reel...

I've noticed Pflueger doesn't use the same numbering system as Shimano and Diawa do in listing the size of the reel. For example, a Shimano 3500 is the same size as a Diawa 3500. But what is a 3500 sized reel in Pflueger?

Pflueger Supreme® Spinning Reel

Reel Model / Gear Ratio / Ball Bearings / Line Capacity / Weight / Price

8038MG 6.2:1 9+1 160/6 7.4   $99.95

8035MG 6.2:1 9+1 200/8 8.8   $99.95

8040MG 6.2:1 9+1 250/10 9.6   $99.95

:-?

do not get salt on a magnesium reel .it will eat it.if it scratches touch it up with touch up paint.i have known guys who didn't take care of magnesium reels properly and had them corrode.

I was counting on Dodgeguy to come to the rescue!

Dodgeguy and JT Bagwell are the go to guys for any Pflueger info

I just bought the 8038 MG.

It'll be a few weeks before I get to try it out though.

It sounds like it might be a good reel with the sealed drag but only time will tell.

What's the comparable size of the Pflueger 8038MG? Is that like a Diawa 2000 or 1500? I can't make heads or tails out of Pflueger's reel sizes. I tried comparing them based on weight, but the magnesium makes them much lighter. And the line capacity didn't seem to correlate either. It's just tough buying one over the internet without being able to hold it, ya know? I want a 2500 size'd reel.

Apparently a lot of yall like Pflueger spinning reels, so that's good.

  • Super User

It's comparable to a 1500 or 2000 reel. (smaller reel)

Oops. I just noticed my favorite reels are all 2500's. That's the size I'm really looking for.

I would strongly suggest steering clear of the pflueger supreme. When you pick it up it feels cheap. The handle on it is very cheap and will most likely wear away.  I know its made of magnesium and light, but they put no protective coating on it, like other manufactures do on their mg reels.  Also, I know they want to make a light reel, but the holes in the ported spool are WAY to big, anything could get in there to effect you reeling ability, like seaweed or a stick or line.

If you want a high quality reel in that same price range you have to get a shimano or a diawa... even quantum might be better than the supreme.

mktrout

mktrout , have you ever fished the supreme ? Is this just your personal opinion based just on handling it in the store ?

To make a qualified statement like that , I believe you would have to use it over a period of time.

You could be right , it might be a piece of crap. I'll let you know after I use it for a few months.

  • Super User

pflueger could build the best reel in the world but mktrout would hate it. the reel was just released so the chance of anyone other than a pflueger pro having used the reel long enough to make a qualified judgement is slim to none.:)

Hey Bass Brat and Dodgeguy: I was gonna PM you but Im short on time Im getting ready to go to work for 4 hours then we leave for Fork Lake. So here it is Stop answering mktrout I did a while ago he's just looking for a dumb argument that will in the end not make a bit of difference.

Dodgeguy and JT have been a wonderful and knowlegable source of info on Pflueger equipment. Now that I have started bait casting, I can't wait til I can afford a couple of Summits My friends Gene and Dan have them and they rock. I have all used Baitcasters that I bought for great prices from people here an Accurist, a BPS Pro Qualifer( according to Tackle review, built and labeled for BPS by Pflueger) and anew (OLder Style) Cabela's Prodigy. The one spinning outift I kept is a St Croix rod with a Pflueger President you know with the cheap handle to make it look expensive

mktrout is like a bad weather day, pay attention to something else and it goes away Save the strokes fellas AINT WORTH THE EFFORT hope to see some of you at the Fork we pull in with the Bass Bus Sun AM

Outta Here

Ill 2nd that MKtrout is just very negotive not worth listening to

mg will interact with a lot of the dissolved minerals in seawater so it is highly subject to corrision problems.

Hey Muddy,

That needed to be said and you said it as well as it could be put.

Good luck at Fork everybody

I like the Okuma'a Aveon reels and the Tica Taurus reels.
