What do you find to be the ideal weight for finesse jigs for river smallmouth, and what do you throw them on?

Featured Replies

I have a medium heavy moderate fast victory, trying to decide if I want 5/16 or 3/8. Targeting clear water river smallmouth holding tight to cover. I assume the trailer prob adds enough heft to cast 5/16 but not entirely sure.

How important is fall rate? I have always understood jigs to be more of a dead sticking bait that you want on the bottom, and 3/8 to 1/2 being ideal.

Lastly, what brand do you like? Anyone used the D&L Baby Advantage?

I can help with this.

The Great Lakes Finesse jig head is really nice. For all but the swiftest of currents, 1/4-3/8 th is perfect. I use a 3/8th

This is the 3/8th size of the Great Lakes Finesse Mini Pro. It's very compact. It's also a bit keeled and stands up a bit on the bottom.

I have it rigged with a Great Lakes Finesse Juvy Craw and am Xzone Stealth Tube.

This is not a jig, I’m talking about a skirted structure jig

Sorry! Thought you meant tube jig!

I’ve had pretty good luck with the Jewel Pee Wee in 5/16 along with a Yamamoto twin tail grub.  I like Basswhacker, Hail Mary, and First Down.

No prob! Those are in my Arsenal as well.

My river smallmouth fishing is in 6 feet or less and I use 3/16 ounce finesse jigs. With hook and skirt and trailer they weigh 3/8 ounce.

What are you throwing on?

It depends on the wind and depth but as light as I can get away with. 5/16 is my go to.

I use the old Falcon Eakins rod or a Denali Android 703.

The D&L is a good jig. Great head design.

I’ve used spinning and baitcasting. M power, fast or extra fast.

Is MF superior to MHMF?

Personally I use MH fast.

Last week I was using a 1/8 jig with a pit boss trailer.  The depth was 1 to 4 feet so he light jig worked great.  I throw them on a medium spinning rod.

I think M power is plenty to set the hook with a skirted finesse jig as this shouldn’t have a real thick wire hook.

As for action I’ve never used a Moderate Fast Rod. The slowest action I’ve used is “Fast”.

5/16oz GP with a Zoom Super Chunk Jr or Chigger Craw as a trailer. This is my #1 jig period and I am a big jig fisherman. For rod I use a 6-9 MHF Kistler with 10 or 12lb floro.
