Spinnerbait on a heavy rod effectively? Should I get a moderate action?

  • Super User

I pretty much use medium heavy for spinnerbaits up to say 1/2 oz. Anything bigger I go with a heavier powered rod. What size spinnerbaits you thinking of fishing?

The line size will have a lot to do with using a heavy rod.  When I use one of mine I keep it to 15# fluorocarbon or 30# braid and use 1/2 oz spinner baits with a trailer.

1oz and 3/4 oz with trailers

I've used an older Zillion 7'6" HF with a 3/4 oz. spinnerbait (no trailer) with no problem.  The only bass I caught on Lake Nochamixon was a 16 inch largemouth with this combo.  Spooled with 12# Sufix Elite.  Will cast that lure a nice distance.  Heavier lure should put it in the next county.  :)

Depends on the bait and the rod.  “Probably” is the answer.  If you’re throwing a 1 oz spinnerbait plus a trailer, you’re about 1 1/8 - 1 1/4 oz in total.  If the rod is spec’d to throw 1.5 oz then definitely.  If it is rated to 1 oz then it depends on the rod but probably so long as you’re not jamming on it.  The only way to know is to try it.

Action-wise, that’s all personal preference.  So many threads here lately on action preference for the various moving baits.

Send it.  You'll figure it out if it works for you pretty quickly.

I'm afraid of breaking a tip. There's zero give in my buddies heavy flippin stick. But my med hvy says 3/4 oz max on it.

I think you’ll def be in a heavy situation depending on if your fishing a rod you have or a rod you want to get.

I was in a similar boat about 5 years ago looking to cast 1 - 1 1/2 oz lures and wound up buying 2 Daiwa Fuegos. 1 for my son and I. Not too pricey but perfect for what we do.

Wish ya luck and hope Santa helps you out.

If you can swing the price which you might want to share for suggestions I have a Okuma TCS heavy powered fast action rod that I feel would be perfect for what you’re looking for. It’s marked as a frog/swim bait rod and has a pretty soft tip with a solid back bone. It’s rated up to 1 ounce lures.

If setting the hook on a log by accident doesn't break it, casting a big spinnerbait will be fine.

Ok so the TCS-A is about $40.00 over your price range. Although I don’t own any of the models currently I would suggest looking at the 13 Fishing Oath series at $99.99 currently. They have a large selection and again I don’t own any currently but I’m planning on adding at least 2 after handling them in store along with having a Fate Black spinning rod currently, in my opinion you’re getting a lot of rod for the price. I’ll also add as others have said I think you should be looking for a heavy powered rod regardless of if it’s mod fast or fast which I would personally use braid on a mod fast and co-polymer or monofilament if you get a fast/extra fast depending on your preferences.

@LokiDawg On the latest sales thread @txchaser found Kistler KLX rods for $99.00, although I know nothing about them it seems like a pretty good deal to look into.

Depends on the weight of the spinnerbait (pair it to the rod rating) personally I prefer a fast action baitcasting rod for SBs as the moderate action rods bend to deep to effectively set the large single hook.

Hi Loki,

The above is in most manufactures heavy rod wheelhouse.  Especially go with the heavy if you trying to bomb/long cast it across flats.  Your using a lot of force to send it so I'd lean to the heavy.  Also getting a good hook set on a bomb cast strike with a lot of line out can get tricky.  You'd want a long stiffer rod.  If your making short casts you may be able to get away with a MH rod.  Really depends on the rod. Test it out with the 3/4 oz and no trailer.  See how it feels. Step it up if your comfortable. That's really the bottom line.

The recommended lure weights are not minimum or maximum weights the rod can perform casting. The are simply suggestions to determine ideal lure weights to use by the mfr. The MH rating is another subjective value has no real performance what the rod power is. The action listed is another subjective value, no standard used how much force is applied to bend the upper section of the rod.
The only way to know is pick up the rod. Put reel on it and run line through all the guides. Pull on the line using a few ounces of force and look how that rod bends under a light load. You are putting a light load of a few ounces far above the lure rating on the rod and the force doesn’t harm the rod because it’s a static force need to bend any rod.

Casting weight 50% heavier than the mfr suggested rating you simply slow down your casting motion into a lob cast.
