Line guide sticking on Daiwa reel

Featured Replies

Daiwa Lexa-WN 300 reel. Video showing how line guide gets stuck in one place when reeling. I cleaned out the worm gear good and re-lubed. I was also able to pull out the pawl, didn't seem to be any issues there. I unscrewed the line guide cap as well, and re-tightened. Can't figure it out, hoping there's a way to fix without pulling the whole reel apart?

More than likely a pawl problem, and not as likely a worm gear problem.

I would double check the tips of the pawl to see if worn or missing a tip on one side. And double check the worm gear as well.

If pawl is OK, then you might try shimming the pawl up to the worm gear a little bit and see if that helps.

An outside issue could be lubrication of the pawl inside the line guide not able to spin easily.

Its definitely a turn around issue, and usually what I find are worn or broken pawls. Shimming and lubrication next. Worm gear probably coming in last. Could be a combination as well.

Hi Skee,

What it is is your pawl is worn down. It isn't as tall any more and isn't staying in the guide.  It is part # 6.  Look at the leading edge. the curved part on the tip pawl that engages with the line guide.  It is (i suspect) worn down. The part you need is part # 400-2540.

Best of luck,

FM.

A worm pawl often presents as hesitation at the point where it changes direction. If the cap isn’t loose and the washer isn’t missing I’d replace the pawl and worm gear as a set. They not expensive parts. Judging from the video I’d be surprised if the worm isn’t damaged. If you need guidance or want it done I’ll be happy to help.

Pawl looks pretty worn but I've identified some wear on the worm gear shaft where it's hanging up as well. I have to take the entire reel apart to replace the worm gear shaft right?

I haven't pulled a Lexa apart, but in most of the ones I have done, the handle side cover needs to come off and the levelwind and drive gear are pretty alone at the front of the reel.

In my experience you don't have to disassemble the "Whole" reel, but you DO need to go inside.

Usually a little e-clip holds the levelwind shaft in place. If you pop that loose, the shaft pieces typically come out from both ends after the pawl is out of there. Just keep a finger on that e-clip so it doesn't go flying.

And take pictures if you haven't done this much. Another option is to just send it Mike at DVT. He's well known around here for doing nice work!

I had a Daiwa Procaster from the 80s that wore out 2 pawls. They sent me replacement parts for free twice, no questions asked. They didn't even charge me postage.

Might check with Mike's Reel Repair in BC for a zirconia pawl - standard MOC in Lew's reels since the '80s - this one fished the surf for two decades.

Mike's zirconia pawl upgrade is go-to in my bench mid-frame Ambassadeurs.

I'm kinda amazed anyone still uses 440 pawls.

To a degree, yes side plates have to come off, exposing the internals of the real. If you want to contact me off-line I’ll walk you through it. If you don’t wanna tackle it you send it in at your convenience. I’ll take care of it.
