Adding Braid under braid

Featured Replies

hi team,

I've been running this same length of 30# 832 for about 4 years now. It's in great shape (been reversed once) and I intend to keep using it. However, it's getting short. I bet I'm down to 45-50 yards of it now after tying and retying for 4 years. At the end of last year I was casting the full length and getting into the backing when throwing a big walking bait or plopper. It would be fine if I was keeping this as a swim jig setup, but occasionally I need it for bombing walking baits. Anyone add 30-40 yards of braid under the existing braid (but above the backing line) to get the length back? the knot wouldn't come into play most of the time and a double Uni with 30# 832 would be plenty small enough to cast through the guides when needed. I'm not seeing any real downside here but wanted to sense check.

thanks,

rick

I get it -

While I would do it - in a pinch on the water maybe,

I'm not a fan of a knot in the middle of my braid main line.

Seems dumb when I use a leader with no problem.

But it's just something about a knot in that location.

I know, I'm a creep & a weirdo.

I do prefer bulk 832, and right now there's a killer deal on 30 lb.

Pretty much a career supply for cheap.

I've been forced to have a uni knot in the 'middle' of the mainline when I couldn't get a wind knot out that was too far down. I don't like it and reline when I get home.

I stack braids all the time - leftover pieces to fill a spool to working line.

The smart thing is having the stronger braid deeper in the stack in case you get that long run.

Double-uni works great for joining braid to braid.

I did one time during a tournament after breaking off 50# Power Pro.

I didn’t have a spool with me of course but my Pro was kind enough to give me about 30 yrds off one of his.

I only used it for over the shoulder bomb casts.

I landed about an 2# and it held fine using a double uni.

As that knot cinches tighter with pressure it would be the only one I would consider using

Like @Kev-mo I use that as my on the water fix, but sooner rather than later I prefer enough line on my reel to not deal with a knot in the middle of it. Blood knot is my choice for braid to braid.

I dont use backing ever .Tie direct to Lews knot slot. I hate splices going through guides. Either straight braid or Florocarbon for me.

I've done it yes without issues. That being said 4 seasons of heavy fishing with the same braid and you're talking about 40 yards plus 40 more yard I'd just replace with whole thing. 150 is the smallest spool i've ever bought. Gonna cut it either way.

IDK man, 4 years of use is some decent use.

50 yards of 30 lb 832 is like $7.

Is it worth it?

Worth potentially losing a big fish over it?

If the line is still in great shape and you fully trust your knots go for it.

Me? I'd just toss it. This summer I lost what I believe would have been my PB due to braid that was maybe used too much. Wasn't a knot failure. If I could turn back time I'd love to do it all over again with fresh line.

PB > $7.

I do it all the time on spinning reels, especially the lighter outfits. 70 yards is more than enough distance to cast. I just make sure to tie a good connection knot. Braid to braid the uni uni is incredibly strong and I use an albright for braid to FC/mono.
