Jerkbait vs. Flatside Crank during this time of the year?

Featured Replies

In clear, deep upland rocky reservoirs for spotted bass.... Which type lure and which size and brand of that lure do you prefer?

Por que no los dos? Right now, either would be bouncing off the lid on all the water up here, but when the water is in the 40's both of those options are on my radar. Maybe crank each spot first to pick off any active fish, and follow up with the jerk if they're in a more neutral mood. My most successful cold water cranks are Duel 75mm shad, R2S tactical DD, frittside 9, and 3" flicker shad and the MB 110jr+1 and the nishine erie 115 MD do a vast majority of my cold water jerkbait damage.

I prefer the one that fish are eating.

If it's up to me, it would be the jerkbait, because I have a strong dislike for fishing cranks. The fish often like to eat cranks this time of year though, so I fish them.

Jerkbaits I fish are the MB 110, 110+1, Jr, and Jr +1, 6th Sense Provoke and +1, MB X-Nanahan and +1, Duo Realis Rozante 77sp, Berkley Stunna 112 and +1, Head Hunter HH Minnow, and the Yo-Zuri 3DB.

Crankbaits are any of the Berkley Frittside, Spro Rock Crawlers, Wiggle Warts, #5 or #7 Shad Raps, Berkley Flicker Shad Shallow, 6th Sense Pressure Series, and Berkley Money Badger.

Both can produce based on the fish's activity level. However, the jerkbait will produce when the fish are neutral, while the flatside may or may not. That's what I'd start out with.

For spots, I'd go with a smaller jerkbait or crank. Sadly, most flat sided cranks are around the same size, 2.25-2.5in.

I fish the flat side and wiggle wart parallel to the bank with the boat parallel also. With the jerkbait ,I fish it more on a 45.

90% of my stick bait fishing is on the vision 110 or one of its derivatives like the Jr. and +1 along with a silent version . I will also use the Spro Mcstick and a old Rogue in table rock shad .

I'll be starting with a lipless crankbait. If that doesn't work then I'll change over to a swim jig or spinnerbait and slow roll it across the bottom.
