How do you set your drag?

Featured Replies

Feel, works for me.

I have mine set pretty tight for the hook set, then adjust as needed.

By feel.

By feel, but targeting 1/4-1/3 of line test. More like 1/4 on braid to leader because there's much less give in the system. And locked down on straight braid.

Line size mostly in sync with hook shank diameter, and both of those are mostly in sync with cover where possible.

I probably set it all a little light, but the reel-and-sweep hook set doesn't have a lot of line slack by the time I get into the serious part of the hook set.

I started off doing it by attaching it to a scale and having someone read off the scale when it hits a max of 30% of the line strength or the max recommended line strength on the rod.

Now I am usually able to do it by feel. In most cases, the proper drag is right around the point when the line starts to dig into the line on the spool regardless of the line type and strength I'm using.

I set mine by feel. There are a few things more annoying than losing fish due to loose drag during hooksets. As long as I feel like I'm in control but not ripping the fish around, I won't change it. I'll just imagine how hard a 3-pounder will fight, and tighten it a tad more.

“Jhunnnnnt!”- that split second sound that your drag makes on a sweeping hook set with a spinnerbait… slips for a nano second before digging in for the fight 💥
