Bird Feeders

Our favorite bonded pair of birds showed up the other day, it’s a bonded pair of ducks my wife and I have named Butch & Bernadette. They started coming in the spring about 5 years ago and visit in both the morning and evening before flying off to settle down for the night. This year Bernadette came maybe a handful of times then abruptly stopped which upset my wife thinking maybe something bad happened to her but I told her she was probably busy laying eggs and being a good mom and lo and behold they came together on Tuesday evening much to my wife’s delight. BTW Butch came twice a day since coming back this spring. We’re still waiting on the hummingbird’s.IMG_2370.jpegIMG_0392.jpeg

  • We hang 'several" feeders out during the year. Some we bring in during winter to discourage squirrel raids. However, we leave out the thistle and suet. Pileated woodpeckers are big fans of the suet, a

  • I put a feeder out for the first time a couple weeks ago. Already have multiple species of birds flocking to it every morning and we really enjoy watching them.

One of the big boys came to my hanging block cage. It’s usually too free swinging for them but he got it done. Bad thing is they will destroy a feed block in no time. I used to hang a suet block o the deck and they got so tame they would fly down with us sitting out there. They would even bring their youngsters with them.

We have two birdfeeders in the back yard. The smaller birds dig through the seed and eat what they want. The rest of the seed falls on the ground and is eaten by the larger birds that will not fit on the feeders, We also get squirrels and rabbits coming in to get the seeds that have fallen on the ground.

It's all good until the grackles show up.

This is a great thread! My wife and I moved out of Kansas City three years ago to a house with country acreage and we have enjoyed the number of birds we have encountered at our feeder, in our yard, and in our woods. This thread was started before I returned from my hiatus from the forum so I am just now seeing this. We really enjoy recording the birds we see and often sit in our backyard just to watch the bird activity up close. We have quite a list of birds we have seen at our feeder, in our yard, and even trying to make nests on the house (barn swallows). This is our list:

Crows

American Goldfinch

Robin

Tree Sparrow

Baltimore Oriole

Barn Swallow

Black-capped Chicadee

Blue-Jay

Brown Thrasher

Brown-headed Cowbird

Carolina Wren

Grackle

Dark-eyed Junco

Downy Woodpecker

Eastern Bluebird

Starling

House Finch

House Sparrow

Hummingbird

Indigo Bunting

Mourning Dove

Northern Cardinal

Northern Flicker

Pileated Woodpecker

Purple Finch

Red-bellied Woodpecker

Red-winged Blackbird

Rose-breasted Grosbeak

Summer Tanager

Tufted Titmouse

I often hear an owl around 5 - 6 AM but I have yet to see it.
