Loomis 844C MBR

Featured Replies

Ok I'm really curious about this rod.

Everything I read talks about it being such a great MULTI PURPOSE rod.

But what if I'm not really in the market for a multi purpose rod?

I'm looking for a SINGLE hook MOVING bait rod. I'm not looking for a rod to throw a spinnerbait, a football jig, and a crankbait on. I already have rods for some of those.

If I'm ONLY looking for a rod that will throw a chatter/spinnerbait and swim jig, should I forget about this rod. There's better things out there?

THANKS

Which level? I have an imx mbr 844c. I use it for 1/2 oz jigs. I had a glx mbr 844 c and didn’t like it at all so I sold it.

I'd go up to Conquest if it meant it was the perfect rod.

I have the imx pro 903C 7'6 MH MBR rod and love it. That extra length makes it awesome and the MH power means its not a broom stick.

I have two older versions, one in the IMX and another in the GLX. Great rods but definitely not my first choice or even my second for chatterbaits, spinnerbaits and swimjigs. My favorite is the NRX+ 883c BJR and then the Megabass P5 Daemos.

I use the 844c's for topwater (buzzbaits especially) , football jigs, and heavier Texas Rigged plastic. The 844c will work for these baits but to me it feels a little off.

What did you not like about it? I had an old glx 844 (wiebe seat) before and didn't care for it, tip was too soft and weird bend/transition. Curious what the others didn't like about GLX 844.

What weight baits and what type of trailer?

3/8 oz to 1/2 oz swims, chatters, and spinnerbaits.

4” Mayor on the swim baits. Chatters would also have something similar.

Spinnerbaits much smaller trailer.

Been googling around, it’s odd that the F5-68X Blade hardly ever gets talked about.

Not a very long rod though.

The blade is a target casting model designed around man made and natural structure. While I’m sure it’s wonderful for what it does the length limits open water distance.

Your weights push the Daemos a bit with the large trailer. For those weights I previously used a St. Croix 7’4 heavy, but I’ve switched over to mainly 3/8th weights with spunk shad trailers and use my 873crr for swim jigs and spinnerbaits.

I know it seems like an odd choice but I’ll try to explain. It was built initially to drag bottom contacts so it has a slower action than the JWR sticks. This action assist fishing with a bend on retrieve and keeps the sensitivity high. Don’t get me twisted, the rod is still fast just not “extra” fast.

I also lean on the Keitech model 3 swim jig as my first choice when fishing from at or near the bank in cover. With a spunk shad trailer it mimics a baitfish in a straight retrieve but isn’t super unbalanced when hopping through cover. It’s highly snag resistant and lets me cover a lot of water if the bass are keyed on that particular profile.

The toughest part of your question is combining what I normally use a moderate fast action vs a fast one. A lot of people fish a bladed jig on a different style rod than their swim jigs or spinnerbaits. If you gotta have one to fish them all you’ll sacrifice a bit in either direction. I choose to sacrifice towards chatterbaits because I don’t throw them as much as swim jigs or spinnerbaits.

Take my advice with a grain of salt as well. I fish from the bank a lot, and otherwise use a kayak. If you’re in a boat 100% of the time you’re better off buying two sticks.

I'm in a kayak currently so I'm leaning towards just one new rod right now for these baits. I still have my old one which has worked fairly well.

I've seen this 844C MBR mentioned a lot, just trying to figure out if there's something better.

The main thing I threw last year was a swim jig so that's the primary purpose for the new rod.

Do you own any NRX models? If not I highly recommend the 873 for all things Kayak. It’s not too long and is such a universal bottom contact rod from 3/8-5/8oz. With space limited we can’t always take 20 combos.

Yep, I have two. Including the model you mention. )

It's my main jig rod, just not swimming.

It's not a loomis... but... the Evergreen Shower Blows model (7'2" mh mf) in their lines is a very special rod for moving single hooks as well as larger trebles. If you were nearby I would lend you one (yes I bought a spare lol).

This is also my primary buzz/chatter rod. It’s that good.

I also use it for the 40 spro rat and other 1-1.5oz wake/topwaters.

Osakana Slide 170, Raid Ghost wire with a 6" swimbait, big jerkbaits, 4.8 Keitechs, the list goes on and on. In a pinch flip a senko with it... then laugh that it's actually not bad at that as well!

I have 844C in NRX and Conquest been wanting to sell one cause I don't really use them both much. When I do it's normally for full size 1/2 oz chatterbaits, Carolina rigs, magdrafts/daingerous swimbaits, 6" Senkos, and 1/2 oz plus TX rigs/jigs(if I already have something on my 854C). It's also pretty good as a dock skipping rod with a 1/2 oz jig.

I have the GLX 844c, it’s a bit soft to me for a 1/2 ounce w trailer jig. Works well around broken rock, sand & loose rock etc. Better for 3/8 and very good on 1/4. I like a stiffer tip myself, an actual dragging style tip. It’s just a different philosophy on bite detection with the softer tip. Some people love that about it. I like a rod that is stiffer in the tip, one that can handle a 1/2 ounce in moderate grass. It’s a very sensitive rod, 10 guides plus tip all SIC. Around 4.5 ounces. Swing speed is excellent imo. Slack line bite detection is awesome, a great Senko rod. Rod recommendations are somewhat difficult because of obvious reasons.

If a bit softer tip isn’t a detriment to you, you can’t go wrong with one. I actually like my 7’5” F&P for 1/2 to 3/4 ounce as the tip is perfect for me, however it’s a niche rod being an nearly exclusive flip & pitch rated 20-25 and extra heavy, therefore it’s swing speed is slower.. I love the rod despite that. I like the GLX rods quite well.
