What rod would be better for a metanium?

Bout the same. Material and craftsmanship would be roughly equal. I’ve heard good things about both lines, but considering your reel I’d look to apply it to an appropriate rod. K2 or another brands high end would be a good match. Attaching a $400+ reel (if USDM) to a sub $200 rod seems odd.

I have a Met on a an M1 and its my favorite MH combo. Yeah its a $200 rod, but its fishes better than an LTB Or IMX. The 7'2 MH is almost as versatile as the Met 70 I have on it. They're Essex, but they're sic guides and hold up to a beating. So yeah M1, for sure. If not M1, then spring for the Zodias.

If I had to choose between those 2 rods I'd go with a feather. But like others have said for that reel I'd get a nicer rod. I have my metaniums paired up to Megabass destroyer madbull and a poison adrena and they are perfect in my opinion.

Can't help with rod selection. Yeah, it's nice to put a costly reel on a costly rod (and I'm currently rearranging mine to do that for the most part). However, I have a $500 reel (paid $300 on closeout) on a $200 rod (paid $75 on closeout). Absolutely love the pairing so it's one combo that I won't be changing. Plan on putting two T3 reels on two older HMG rods. Another mismatched pair (pricewise) that work good together.

There's a Phenix K2 765 on amazon for $333, which is pretty stellar deal.

With much luck, I grabbed a K2 714 last fall off Amazon for $200. I think it's still a great deal at $333 and would look real nice with a met on it. I have 2 feathers as well and think they're excellent for the price.

Lets be honest, if the M1 or Feather were made with the same specs by Loomis or SC, they would be $300+ easy.

I fish with a couple rod builders who dont mess around with junk. The one guy is a Century rep, but he uses, Rainshadow, Zenaq and Yamga blanks for personal and builds for friends. Both of those guys can get anything they want, and they think a lot of those K2 blanks. Theyre great for weakfish and schoolie rods. Theres another Phenix blank which the name escapes me. Theyre blanks made for pelagics and they use the popping models often.

Notice I specifically separated the blanks from the finished rods.

If you can get the finished K2 at the price that link had it at when it was posted, then it's a great deal. If you buy it at the time this is being posted then you may want to learn how to build rods.

What are you looking to throw with it ?

Of the two, I like the Feather better. Something about the M1 doesn’t feel right to me.

I have my Met on a SC LE and love it! I tried it on other less expensive rods but it was like putting a Ferrari engine in my Subaru Forester.

Phenix would need to offer a 15 year or lifetime warranty to directly compare to SC and Loomis. That warranty is built into the cost. I’d imagine if SC gave you 1 year craftsmanship guarantee like Shimano their offerings would be significantly more affordable.

I’ve never even held a Phenix rod. I can’t find one within two hours of Knoxville in TN.

While I can say I’ve heard or read certain things about a brand, I don’t want to recommend something costing hundreds of dollars without putting time in on the water. This leads me to recommend brands I can honestly give feedback with because I’ve owned them for years.

Not many Phenix dealers around here either. TD used to carry a couple in the showroom, usually M1 inshore or some kind of pelagic rod. Even though they werent what I was interested in, you got a sense of the build quality and philosophy after handling them. First thing you notice is the weight, or lack of it.

Yes, its hard to recommend a rod you haven't used, but on the same token, barring an overwhelming and unanimously poor reviews, its hard to discount a rod you have no experience with either.

I discounted 13 as an influencer brand. Had a opportunity to get a Muse for a great price and took it. I wanted to hate it, but it really blew me away. I immediately compared it to the older faster tapered Avids, except Muse was considerably lighter and had better balance. Sadly Rapala gutted the company, but at one time 13 had the BEST customer service Ive ever dealt with. A buddy of mine called them up after getting an Omen from TW. He complained about a scuff on the blank. They sent him a brand new rod and told him to keep the old one, no charge at all. Now my Muse only has a 7 year warranty, but its completely covered. If I break it over my knee, I can still get a new 1 for shipping cost.

....They do, with the US made rods.

While its not a real lifetime warrany like SC or some other companies have, it matches Loomis LMIITED lifetime warranty. Essentially meaning that upon anaylsis, if Loomis or Phenix decided that the failure was due to a defect, then you can warranty the rod. Difference is Phenix requires a replacement fee. Now no one likes fees, but the benefit of going with a Phenix is you get a little better rod for the $. For $300 you get a rod thats very comparable to GLX, whereas with Loomis the GCX is $260. While GCX isnt a bad rod, its essentially and reworked E6X which is on par with a great $120 rod or good $150.

Full disclosure, I did blow up my M1, BUT it wasnt out of the blue. I slipped on a bunch of wet leaves and fell down a hill with it in my hand. I got dinged up, but I kept the rod straight. The sendond fall was what did it. It was pouring rain and I was walking u pa steep bank right next to the road. My boot slipped in the mud and about 2' down from the tip, the blank hit the guard rail, hard. I was shocked it didnt break right there. I was sure it was goign to blow up, but I had a couple days where I did well and 1 day where I just beat them down on a bladed jig, all with the same rod. I had caught and flipped fish that were 4lbs without the blank exploding. I figured it was ok. Sure enough about 3 weeks ago I stopped at a bridge on the way home and was bombing a swim jig along a pad line. I do this think where I grab the bait and pull on it just enough to load the blank a little. Im not pulling straight down or nearly enough to high stick it, but it hit the 4th eye down and just POW! scared the hell outa me.

I was really bummed, that was a great rod. I needed the receipt to warranty the rod and i Must have not dug it out of the tube and tossed the tube. I had to contact TW to get a copy. They told me to send it to them and they would take care of it. Other than being in 2 pieces, the rod is in great shape. I guess TW checked it out and said it was a defective rod and gave me the cost of the rod in credit. A replacement is supposed to be $70, which isnt cool, but the rod broke right where it smacked the guard rail, which I don't think is a coincidence. So, now a replacement is on the way and I didn't pay anything. I'll see what happens, but if they give me $50 in credit, Im going to have to tell them they made a mistake and pay for the rod or square up somehow.

I wasn’t aware Phenix offered the limited warranty. I know Loomis will do a no questions asked expiditor replacement with fee for those “shut in the car door” episodes. Thanks for the info.

Yeah, theyre newer iterations of older models. They just started them last year... I think? Suposedly the Red Diamonds are pretty nice. Again, the limited retailer thing here on the East coast makes it hard to commit without actually getting hands on with one. On paper the lengths are similar, they have the 7'2 MH F, which is the model of M1 I really like. Someone said the blanks are the older Falcon blanks, which I heard were good, but again, until your hands on, its a crapshoot.

Loomis worked with me when my GW GLX broke. They said it wasn't a defect, but the discontinued the rod, which was a shame, it was a Mag Light, a real unicorn of a blank. Had like a Stout M spine and mid, but the tip was a really crisp ML. The M+ Shimanos look similar.
