Senko as a jerkbait?

Gary Yamamoto designed the Senko with the idea that it could be used as a soft jerkbait. I haven’t done it a whole bunch, because I normally fish a fluke. It sure does look good in the water though. Anybody else do this?

Years ago before I swore off the senko it was my go to around and over shallow vegetation, twitch twitch pause, or rippin it through and out of weeds. A 1/8 or 3/16oz split shot or mojo rig (12-18" leader) is just money and can offer a similar presentation a little deeper, many days they'd be all over that but wouldn't touch a weightless one, it was usually tougher conditions with clearer water or brighter days. Edit: works great with flukes too!

I tried it before and didn't get any action. But that's a tiny sample size.

Interesting, thanks.

I really haven’t fished it that much. Yesterday I was flipping some bushes from shore, and I decided to twitch it back. I didn’t get any hits, but I could certainly see how it would have triggered a bass in the area.

Nope, never fished a Senko... and if that doesn't show my disdain, I have wacky rigged a Caffeine Shad.🥸

My love affair with the fluke has prevented me from jerking a Senko.

I did have a weightless ZinkerZ start floating after the salt expired and was surprised by the darting action.

When using a Senko as a jerkbait, try using a light (like 1/16 oz) keel weighted swimbait hook. They will dart like nobody’s business.

No disrespect here, but Gary Yamamoto did not design the Senko to be used as a jerkbait. I met him in 1999 at a I cast show in Chicago and he explained to me that the lure should be cast and let sink to the bottom. It should be retrieved with hops and again letting it sink to the bottom. No fast retrieve or jerks. I did not follow his instructions and tried it as a jerkbait until the next Spring when I finally understood and began catching bass with it.
