Hello everyone.

New to the forums, located in Northern Ca. Signed up to learn more about fishing.

I used to fish as a kid, with my father. Him bringing me along on trips didn't last very long, because I was a very active and talkative 10 year old who couldn't sit still if my life depended on it.

Never thought about fishing until just recently when my wife and son wanted to go to the local lake with some family. We all caught the fishing bug, and I really enjoyed it.

Being in Ca, I have a lot of spots local to me, so it shouldn't be hard getting out. Its time that makes things difficult. But I am pretty excited to get started. I was given a pole by a friend, and did some very basic research on minimal equipment. I'm not trying to go pro, just enjoy some time outside.

Look forward to learning a lot, maybe run into some people out fishing. I probably wont post a whole lot at first. mostly reading and learning. But the occasional question may pop up.

Welcome to the forum. Spending quality time fishing with your family? Congrats, you're already doing it right!

Sticking with minimal equipment is a great idea. I wish more people did that starting off. If you focus on how to cast accurately and learn to fish just a plastic worm and spinnerbait well you'll be able to routinely get high quality bass anywhere you go.

Seriously though, this forum has many super experienced anglers. I have learned so much here. Be sure to share your experiences on here, we can all learn something even if ya get skunked….

Gotta spend time with the boy before he's "too cool for his dad" haha. And yes, I'm a keep it simple and learn kind of person. Who knows where it will lead, but for now.. keepin it simple.

I am learning already. Two new terms I have never used. Anglers - I guess we don't call them fisherman anymore? And Skunked, I am assuming that is what happened to us today on our first outting.. came home with not even a bite!

Angling specifically means fishing with a hook. It's been around since the 15th century. Comes from the old English word for "fish hook" which was angol.

So somebody who catches fish with a net could be a fisherman, but wouldn't be an angler.
