Best line for baitcaster?

Featured Replies

Hi,

Recently bought a baitcaster, First thing I did was spooled up some braided spyder wire steath..  :'(

After several random lures snapping off on my casts im starting to think i chose the wrong brand of line.

Can you guys reccomend some good brands that I can pick up?

Mono, or braided whatever is best for baitcast reels.

Thanks.

It really depends on where ur fishing ...heavy cover, wood, rocks etc i use berkley big game 10 lb test on all of my rods then i move up a few lbs as  the situation dictates and depending on your reel you can go down to  8 pound  berkley maxx. Some go down to  6 &4 lb line but if i did that id use spinning.IMO if you go below 10 lb line seems like you have more birdnest

I like yo-zuri hybrid ranging from 10lb to 15 lb. Any thing bigger I go to power pro. But I have to had the same problems with spider wire.

I use Yozuri Hybrid Ultra Soft #12...

;)

Welcome aboard!

thats funny because i bought 8lb spider xxx fishing line and it slung most of my lures. so i switched back to my cheap 10lb test and it works great

RW....My partner & I lost some really nice LM in heavy timber on weightless senkos and Zoom Lizards yesterday and after dark. Couldn't haul back with enuff force to keep em up and so forth. I'm tired of paying high dollar for the Ultra Soft what with S&H.  Works out to about $17/600 yds anywhere I can find it. Have you tried suffix elite? Your thoughts on an alternative is appreciated. I fish heavy timber most of the time and need a line I can find easy. I'm switching to a Daiwa L/T 5RB rod (12-25#line) and a Shimano 200B to get leverage on these fish and I can't seem to manage casting bigger than 15# w/o problems.  Whaddya think?  Papadew

You know I'm not a fan of braid, but in  heavy vegetation and timber, that might be the answer for you.

SWIFF, I've tried Sufix Elite, and I like it. But, I'm using it on my crankbait rode and my spinnerbait rod. I have not used it heavy cover. They way it casts and handles leads me to believe that it may not be the most abrasion resistant of lines. You might try Berkley Big Game or XT for your situation. Both handle reasonably well and can take the abuse.

Cheers,

GK

Thanks for the suggestions guys.  I had a spool of 15# big Game and decided against braid from prior experience in timber-too many break-offs.  Suffix may be a step up from BG, but overall, BG is more affordable IMHO and gets the job done quite well as a rule. Sooo, I'm cheapenin' up and beefing up at the same time.  Tight lines-SWIFF

Trilene XL,XT,and Big Game are all excellent mono lines.I also like Yo-Zuri Hybrid for flippin'/pitchin' into heavy cover.

SWIFF-Try Power Pro braid.  I use 50# (size of 12# mono) for heavy cover on my baitcasting reel.  I use 20# (size of 6# mono) on my spinning reel.  Nice thing about braid on the spinning reel is that it does not twist like mono.  Nice thing about the 50# braid is you can raise the lake bottom if needed.

If you do go with braid especially the 50# put a heavy wooden dowl in your boat to break it with if you get hung.  You will cut your hand or break your reel if you try and pull it loose with these.  Usually the line never breaks, the item you are hung on does or your hooks straighten.

Also, with 50# braid loosen your drag or you will tear the hooks loose on a hard hook set.

SWIFF,

Suffix is a very good line but if you are really in the heavy timber (or rocks) you can't beat Trilene XT.  It takes a little getting used to for some people but not more than one trip.  We fish a lot of mesquite, pecan trees and old barbed wire fence rows... no other line holds up like XT.
