Can you guys talk about technique specific rods?  All of my rods are 6'6" and medium or medium heavy.  I am currently trying many new techniques and have noticed that certain baits don't work very well on certain setups.  For example - i threw a 1/2 oz spinnerbait on a medium action spinning rod and the reel was struggling on the retrieve.  

I don't know anything at all about this topic so as much info as you have would be appreciated.  Please talk about rod length, action and tip.

Although nearly all of your fishing can be done with one rod only, if you want to break it down, these are the three I think will cover (almost) everything:

7' Baitcaster; Heavy Power/ Fast Action (Power fishing)

6 1/2' or 7' Spinning rig; Medium Power/ Fast Action (Finesse fishing)

6 1/2' or 7' Baitcaster; Medium or MH Power/ Moderate Action or Fast Action      

                with a soft tip (all medium weight treble hook lures)

Besides the rods you already have the only other rod you should get would be a 6'6" - 7' crankbait rod. St. Croix makes one in the premier series for about $90 that works great.

I would go with a 6-1/2' or 7' heavy rod with a fast tip anytime your in really thick cover.

Let me comment on these "technique series" of rods currently being sold.When i first started using loomis rods years ago when they first came out with glx graphite first used in flyrods(have two)there was no such thing as technique rods,if you knew what you were doing you'd pick the action and power to what bait you used.I believe these rods are made to catch the fisherman not nearly as much as the fish.

I have yet and will not buy one of these type rods,i will stick to the norm in actions so long as they are made,now to help a little.In my lineup i rarely use baits over 1/2oz,most are 1/4-3/8 oz spinnerbaits,6' plastic worms,3/8 oz jigs,3/8 oz cranks,the medium action baitcasters i use in imx or glx i use for spinnerbaits,crankbaits,topwater,they have enough balls in the butt section to pull fish from cover but not be too stiff to allow good casting.I try and use a med-hvy action for worms and jigs to help penatrate the hook in a bass' jaw hence the stronger action,i also use it with smaller hopkins spoons for jigging deep structure,the light actions i mostly use when downsizing to inline spinners,small crankbaits and minnow type baits like rapalas or yo-zuri minnows,they are also used for my main small jig bait a blakemore roadrunner,hope this helps. 8-)

That rig will work just fine for the "catchin' part," but it won't be much fun to use during the "fishin' part."

Well, a 1/2 oz bait on a M spinning rod is typically the upper limit for that rod.

I'm currently replacing my old school fishing equipment with 3 setups.

One baitcast reel 6'6" Medium Crankin Stick from BPS fishing cranks, spinnerbaits and such.  I currently have this rod matched with a junky baitcast reel.  Planning on switching it with a Revo S.

One baitcast reel 6'6" MH Fast/Extra fast action rod for jigs and heavier soft plastics (I don't typically throw anything over 1/2 oz).  I plan on getting the Citica Extreme combo from BPS for this setup.

One spinning reel 6'6" (I like that length!) spinning rod for weightless plastics.  No idea what I'm getting here.  I currently have a spinning setup that is servicable so this is the lowest priority.

A 6'6" medium spinning rod is rated up to around 1/2 oz whereas the same length and action in a trigger rod is 5/8 oz.  At least that is the BPS brand rods.  I don't have the funds available to fish the top of the line stuff.
