Jerk Bait Posted June 1, 2007 Posted June 1, 2007 Today, Wurm and I went and did some bank fishing. I had been reading alot about Senko's here on the forums. I decided to pick some up and give them a try. I rigged them wacky style. I've never fished this way before, so I had some learning to do. I did catch a couple dink's, but still have some adjustment's and patience to learn. As I was reeling in the Senko rigged wacky, it was riding along the top of the water surface. I was reeling it in rathery quickly to get through some thick weeds that were on the other side of the spot where I was fishing. As I was reeling in it was making a poping sound like that of your typical popper. It was about 10-15 ft. from the bank when "BAM" it got hit. I started laughing because it just struck me funny. I never expected it to get hit that way. I didn't get the hook set which suprised me being that it was rigged wacky. Topwater is always fun!! I will say, it was fun learning and those that said they cast like a bullet were exactly right. I was able to stick it anywhere. Awesome lure!! Looking forward to using them again and learning more. Wurm Posted June 1, 2007 Posted June 1, 2007 I never saw anyone use the wacky rig, and he outfished me! He did buy me a bag of senko's so hopefully sunday I can try them out. Quote
xxmurrxx Posted June 3, 2007 Posted June 3, 2007 I had a hit with a senko on topwater texas rigged, didn't catch it but the fish seemed to be going crazy for top waters lures that day. Today i also got a fish simply by reeling in the senko I agree they are great baits Quote
mike bat Posted June 3, 2007 Posted June 3, 2007 i love to us a 6ft6 med spinning rod .... i like to fish the senko texas with no weight .... just cast her out let her sink and start with the rod tip down at the water and start with some snapps .... work it like a jerk bait but slower .... snap and let her sink and lay a few seconds and the snap again ..... thas senko will come alive ,,, snakeing through the water then falling back to the bottom .... Autiger1291 Posted June 3, 2007 Posted June 3, 2007 It has happened to me multiple times as well. Always amused me because I could never figure out what natural food it looked like. Quote
Lightninrod Posted June 4, 2007 Posted June 4, 2007 It has happened to me multiple times as well. Always amused me because I could never figure out what natural food it looked like. When wacky-rigged and moved across the top. the flapping ends may represent a frog....... :-? Quote

Guest ncbass24 Posted June 5, 2007 Posted June 5, 2007 Like Mike said, fish them like a jerkbait. The senko darts around and looks like some sort of creature. The strikes are explosive. Quote
jb_adams Posted June 5, 2007 Posted June 5, 2007 That's cool that you got a strike on it. You should have tied on a buzzbait or something after that. If the fish are active enough to bite on that, I would have burnt a buzzbaits paddle off! Funny, I've never caught a fish or had a strike on a senko the "traditional method" like a jerkbait. I've tried it numerous times but just don't seem to have the patience for it. I like using senkos on spot removers or t-rig. I've fished them wacky style, weightless t-rig, and carolina rig (awesome for c-rig which is essentially a weightless t-rig sort of). I prefer spot remover (shaky head) though because it keeps it on the bottom vs. weightless. I haven't found senkos that usefull in really muddy or very stained water. With low visability, the fish just don't see it as well even with bright or dark colors. I'm determined to try the weightless t-rig more this fall. I may put a split sinker about 3ft up the line to give it a slightly faster fall. Quote
phase5supply Posted June 5, 2007 Posted June 5, 2007 I was useing a black/blue arounnd some trees, it got stuck over a branch and was about half out of the water. I shook it a little and a nice fish about 3 lbs. nailed it, she came out the water about a foot. It was real cool, I even landed her. Quote
Super User Bassin_Fin@tic Posted October 1, 2007 Super User Posted October 1, 2007 Ya, but hasnt anybody ever heard of using to sort of walk the dog? Especially atop weeds or scum moss? You gotta work it kinda quick, but if and when you find one fish hitting it this way,you will stand to load the boat.Really wanna give this a whirl?Try the yamamoto Kut Tails Series 6.5 inch instead, and seems to me that those outproduce the senko every time except wacky rigged. Forgot to mention in order to pull this off the rod must be held upward about 10 oclock on semi slack line twitches, develope a rythym, it really seems to irritate the hell out of em some days when you know they are there but wont hit a frog. jb_adams Posted October 1, 2007 Posted October 1, 2007 I tried the "Pop-R / senko trailer" and it worked for me on the third cast. I missed the hookset so it got off. I felt the fish fighting and I thought it was on good but evidently it wasn't. This technique get's there attention to come look and the senko at the back looks like it's following the pop-r and looks super real. You have to be ready for the hookset and use a sweeping hookset like a c-rig to really drive the hook in & get the slack out. This weekend, I couldn't buy a bite if it were on a blue-light special clearance rack. I meant to try this rig but I honestly don't think it would have worked this weekend. The fish seemed to want a super fast action. I reeled in my jig really fast because of a bad cast and I had a small bass chasing it. Why I didn't pick up on that immediately, I don't know. In my mind, slow and small was the way to go. I will be sure and try this again though. Quote
Davis Posted October 1, 2007 Posted October 1, 2007 I'll T-rig a senko and it work it like a finesse worm on or near the surface. Looks almost like an injured baitfish. Got some nice LM working this technique right before dark. Quote
Super User roadwarrior Posted October 1, 2007 Super User Posted October 1, 2007 If you're going to fish the Senko as a topwater bait, I STRONGLY recommend the Senko Swimbait. Quote
Davis Posted October 1, 2007 Posted October 1, 2007 If you're going to fish the Senko as a topwater bait, I STRONGLY recommend the Senko Swimbait. Still trying it out. Not getting the action that I really want out of it. Trying different weights and styles. Quote
Super User roadwarrior Posted October 1, 2007 Super User Posted October 1, 2007 According to Gary Yamamoto, you need to use a heavy 5/0 Offset Round Bend Hook with a 1/4 oz screw-in bullet weight. Energy is transfered to the tail with this rig for better action. Quote

ABC123 Posted October 2, 2007 Posted October 2, 2007 If you're going to fish the Senko as a topwater bait, I STRONGLY recommend the Senko Swimbait. I'll second that. I love working them off shore, back to the boat, and in reeds and other standing cover. Caught many fish that way. I used 3/0 without issue, but since have bought 4/0 but have not tried them yet. I use a worm hook. Tru turn brand. Quote
Super User Sam Posted October 2, 2007 Super User Posted October 2, 2007 Jerk Bait, The same thing happened to me last month at one of my client's ponds in Maryland. I had thrown the 5 inch Senko wacky style along the shoreline and was reeling it fast along the bank and then through some mukcy grass to recast when a small bass hit it. I don't know who was more surprised. Me or the fish. Small one, under one pound. But he did hit it and he hit it hard. Glad to know this has happened to another person. Quote
Super User Tin Posted October 2, 2007 Super User Posted October 2, 2007 The senko is an amazing bait and it is sooo simple. Legend has it Gary Yamamoto accidentley dropped his pen in the water and watched it fall and the rest is history. There are videos of anglers on the B.A.S.S. tour ( forgot where i saw them) acctually using it in the mid 1990's so it has been around for a while. If you are around pads or grass that grows thick to the top of the water it is great to use up top. But go heavy, 7' Medium Heavy casting set-up with 65 pound braid, and a heavy duty wide gap is the way to go. Quote
