I just got an E21 rod for Christmas and I need a lightweight reel to match with it.  I am normally a flag-waving member of the Shimano Posse but I am not opposed to opening my horizons.  Most of my rods are Loomises and I have Chronarchs or Curado Ds on most of them (with the exception of a TDZ but that reel was one of the Cabela sale ones that sat on the shelf too long and needs a servicing and I haven't gotten around to sending it to the Reel Mech yet), but this Carrot Stick is SOOO light that I think a Curado or Chronarch would not be well suited.  I am looking for a high-end LIGHT reel that is smooth (so far my TDZ is NOT smooth).

I am considering the Shimano Core and various modified TDZ's I have seen on the internet.  Any advice is greatly appreciated.

I forgot to mention that I use lefty reels and I don't want to spend $450 if a $300 reel will do almost the same thing.  

I don't have a Core (yet), but that is what I would get!

I was worried about that when I got mine too. But I have reels on them that weigh 7.5-just under 9 ounces and it doesnt through them out of balance and it feels great imo. Dont need to spend the big bucks.

Yep 51MG! Just like RW said.  They only weigh 5.9 oz. They are super light. Only problem is they dont hold alot of line but that's fine. I've never casted 105 yards in my life.  

Well I have $150 worth of gift cards to Bass Pro so I will head over there tonight and check out the MG51 and some of the Diawa competition.  I might have to take a serious look at a Steez since I can get one for under $300 with the gift cards....

If you go with a super light reel you will feel the weight of the tip section of the rod. Take the rod to your nearest tackle shop, and start with the lightest going to the heaviest reel on that rod, and you will notice that around the 7oz mark is were the reel/rod system will start to neutral balance (the system as a whole gets lighter).

So IMPO I wouldn't waste any big bucks on a super light reel.

I put a Revo Prem on my Carrot Stix and the balance feels great.

I would take a serious look at the top 3 Pflueger reels, the Summit, Supreme, or the Patriarch. I have not used the Patriarch, but my Summit and Supreme are amazing reels for the price and they feel great on every rod that I have from the Midas, All Star Platinum, H&H HX4, Bass Pro, and Rapala rods.

Actually I posted a pic of a Calcutta Cigar reel on it when I first got the rod - I've never used that reel.  

The Core, by the way, ended up on the Dobyns Extreme.
