G. Loomis rods...worth the $ ???

Recommended Posts

I think so, but obviously not in everyone's budget.  I am referring only to the IMX and GLX line, as I feel their are better options in the lower priced Loomis products.  I feel lucky to be in a hobby that for $300 I can buy the best rod fishing companies have to offer (IMHO of course).  My brother is in to photography, and you'd have to pay 8-10k for a top-of-the-line camera and the accompanying lenses.  When I think about that...my combos just don't seem that expensive.

Are G. Loomis rods worth the price? Why/Why not?

What other rods are comparable for less money?

WELCOME to the forum!

G-Loomis rod fans (and I am one of them) will tell you they are certainly worth what we pay for them, because they are superior rods in every way.

G-Loomis fans will also tell you that no other rods compare at any price.

Maybe a better question would be what rods compete with Loomis in the same price range? Loomis has some low end rods (GL2) that don't compare at all to their higher end rods. You will get a lot of opinions about this. This is  JMHO

They're worth the money, if you have the money to pay for them. There's no rod, for cheaper that is the same. There are some rods that are a bit cheaper, that are good for sure, but they still don't compete with loomis.

I've never owned a GL2 or GL3, but many guys will say, there's other rods for that price range that are just as good, but once you get to the IMX then GLX, it's all good  8-)

The IMX and GLX rods stand out to me. Before I got my IMX, I fished St. Croix exclusively. Now, I'd have to say that my lone Loomis is my favorite rod. ;D  As for the GL2 and GL3 rods, I'd rather have a St. Croix Avid. The GL2s are nice, but they just don't justify the current price. Back a few years ago when the GL2 was closer to $100 I thought they were slightly over priced, but now... ;)

They also make some very nice rods in the Bronzeback series, and I hope to get one some day.

I would have to say the IMX line is the best bang for the buck from Loomis.  I have a couple of GLX's, they are a funner rod and more sensitive but the extra cost is a luxury.  This is not to say they are not worth the money. The cost and fun factor is up to the owner.  If I had the money, I would go for the GLX without hesitation.

Thanx Ronnie. But what exactly is it that makes the G. Loomis rods better than the rest? What about the lower end G. Loomis rods?

I'm not sure I completely understand all that goes into their graphite and blank construction. What sells me on them is how light, sensitve and well made the IMX & GLX models are. Best warranty in the buisness and when you hold one in your hand or fish with it, you just know it can't be beat. You can feel a fish breath on your bait and you can fish all day and your arm isn't worn out.

As far as the GL2 & GL3 models, I think you pay a little extra for the G-Loomis name. I only have one GL2 and it is an OK rod, but doesn't compare at all to the IMX.

he's right on about the GL2 and GL3 they are good rods but nothing "special" many other manufacturers make rods just as good- now IMX and GLX is a whole other matter...

I think it depends on what you are using the rod for. For plastics and jigs, I don't think any other rod offers the sensitivity of G.Loomis. I have 4 Loomis rods all with different blanks; a GLX, an IMX, a Mossyback, and a GL2. I use the GLX and Mossyback(feels almost as sensitive as my GLX to me) for plastics and jigs, and the IMX and GL2 are all-purpose rods. I do not regret the cost of any of my G.Loomis rods, but you are buying a name also. If you are going for all around rods, you can get an equal rod for less money. Heck I use less expensive St.Croix, Quantum, and even Berkley Lightning Rods, just depends on how I feel that day.

I am with the crowd on this one.  Loomis rods just feel better- feel is a huge part of fishing.

One short story to confirm I bought the right rods.  I was out with a buddy fishing this past November- we had a good day on the lake and were heading home.  He had some tackle box fussing to attend to so he sat in the back seat for the project.  Without realizing one of my Loomis rods was in the car and about  2 inches out a window.  Neither of us noticed this- my buddy got cold and rolled the window up snipping those 2 inches right off.

I sent it Loomis with a "head held low shameful" letter.  They replaced the rod for the cost of the shipping.

Bravo Loomis

Welcome aboard. I too am a big fan. Most Loomis fans can tell a story of a free replacement( minus shipping). Their customer service is second to none.

Although IMO several manufacturers are closing the gap the GLX remainds in a class by itself....................Al
