BPS Rods and Reels!

Featured Replies

Just want to know what everyone thinks about Bass Pro Shop Rods and Reels???

Are there any Rods and reels worth buying? And wich ones would you recomend!

Thanks!

BPS rods are pretty well regarded, and there are models to fit every budget. I have a Johnny Morris Elite baitcasting rod with Recoil guides, and two Pro Qualifiers with Alconite guides. They appear to me to be as well made as any rod out there. I'm very pleased with their weight, sentitivity and overall handling. I have big hands and I like the powerhump grips.

I also own a 6' light Bionic Blade spinning rod with a BPS Enticer spinning reel. It was relatively inexpensive but I really like it.

I just bought a Johnny Morris Elite baitcasting reel and I am very impressed with the way its built and its performance. It casts as well, or better, and my Revo STXs, and the brake is very effective. I think it was a good buy.

I never really heard anything bad about BPS rods. They all seems to be well respected in their price class. Reels are a mixed bag - some people like them, some don't. I've only owned one BPS reel, the Enticer, and my experience has been positive. I expect the JM Elite will do well, too.

Frankly, I think BPS stuff is as good as any other brand in the same price range.

What sort of set-up do you want - spinning or baitcast?  And what technique - plastics, jigs, spinnerbaits, etc?

I own 2 BPS Tourney Special rods 7' and I think they are good rods just my opinion.  I also just bought a BPS Pro Series spinning reel and just used it for the first time and I like it.

Its for my buddy, hes wanting to learn how to fish with a baitcast reel but doesnt want to pay $300 for Shimano, Quantum, etc...

He wants to buy a BPS baitcasting reel and rod, possibly a combo! I know nothing about the BPS brand, so I was hoping for some advice!

Thanks!

just bought a  Johnny Morris spinning reel the JM 4000 and is very smooth and well made cant wait to bring it out on the water

generally BPS brand is a generic  brand its well made with out the price that the brand names bring

I bought the BPS tourney baitcaster for my dad to learn on.  I threw it a couple times and for a reel around $50 i loved it.  I also personally own a BPS extreme series 7' MH casting rod and that thing is great.  It has enough backbone to throw 2 oz baits as well.

This is coming from someone who doesn't like most BPS brand stuff.

Gentlemen, thank you for the quick replies and advice! I wasnt too sure about the quality of the BPS brand! Doesnt sound like its too bad! Especially for a beginner!

Thanks again!

KB he can have the best of both worlds. BPS sells a Shimano Citica coupled with a BPS Extreme rod. Maybe the best value combo that there is. The Citica is probably the best BC value for the money of almost any rbrand out there. 2008 BPS catalog shows $169.99 everyday price.

A beginner cant go wrong with these rods. I own 3 of them. I still use the 7'MH Extreme Rod for my big spinnerbait rod. This is a very good all around rod that can be used for jigs, worms, C-rig, and spinnerbaits.

I am not that high on the BPS reels. Maybe I got a melon >;)

I think the Citica/Extreme combo is a very good choice. I picked one up a month or so ago and I am very impressed with the quality of the rod and you can't go wrong with a Shimano reel. I also believe you can still get a $30 rebate from Shimano on the reel.

I have 2 crankin sticks, a 7' extreme, an extreme reel, 2 JM signature reels and a JM elite reel. Not a single problem, reasonably priced (all were purchased on sale) and good quality. I would recommend their products.

With regards to the Citica / Extreme combo, what would you'll consider the most versatile handle (A, B, or C) and action (M vs MH)?  I don't have a lot of room on my boat so my rods have to do more than one thing.  I'm looking for a cranking, spinnerbait, flipping rod/reel combo.  I fish mostly grass, very little timber.

I'm thinking handle B medium action?  I probably need a MH for flipping grass right?

Also, how important is a flipping switch for flipping?
