reel lube

Featured Replies

It is time for me to probably lube up the 'ol baitcaster, and I was wondering, what is the best stuff in your peoples opinions. Also, I took the side plate off and sprayed it with reel magic. Did this do anything good, bad, indifferent?

*** sells a GREAT lubricant! Highly recommend it! If not his lubes then I'd suggest Ardent's Reel Butter.

When I do my shimanos I like to stay with the shimano greese  but I switched to Rocket Fuel for oil and WOW what a difference. Cant say enough about this stuff it is GREAT. Jusmt my opinion

Another thing, how do I apply the grease? Sorry for such a dumb question, but this is my first time lubing a reel, and I just want to make sure it is done right.

I second the reel butter that Ardent makes their reel oil is great as well.

basser89,

Thanks basser. It is the same as the Shimano oil, and the grease is a Lithium. Oils & Grease

Keep that crap in the trash can. You don't spray silicones into a reel.....

Ballistik,

When I do my shimanos I like to stay with the shimano greese
If your talking about the white Drag grease from Shimano it isn't a gear grease it is used on the drag pads (Shimano® Drag Grease)...
but I switched to Rocket Fuel for oil and WOW what a difference. Cant say enough about this stuff it is GREAT. Jusmt my opinion
That's is a lot of anglers opinions on the stuff except is very light (viscosity wise)and will have to be repeated quite often during the season..

searoach,

Another thing, how do I apply the grease?
Oil for bearings only (one Drop max). Grease for main and pinion gears. Push the grease down into the teeth base.. Thats it, nowhere else....

Hey guys!

Everyone is entitled to their "opinion", but if you are looking for "advice" from someone that has been in the reel maintenance and repair business for thirty years or so, you might want to re-read reelmechanic's post and take notes!

Whats your opinion on Hot Sauce?

I'll bring this back up to the top so David might see it and reply again, but in the mean time this is what he has said in the past:

The "red" is just a dye that stains everything. The oil itself has a low viscosity, so reels must be cleaned and relubed often.
