My birthday is coming up and my dad said he would take me to Green Top to choose a new casting reel and rod. I use older gear that has been handed down to me and I was wondering what you all with more experience with newer tackle would suggest for a nice 7' rod and reel mostly for jigging and plastics.

Would be helpful to know what kind of price range... If we are talking "money is no object" welllllllll have I got the set up for you ...

If money isn't an object here then you are one lucky dude. The sol is the alpha us counterpart not exactly the same, but same frame similar design and applications.

Shimano Core and a Loomis BCR803 would be my setup of choice for soft plastic and jigs.
