first off i stink at spinning gear. i have an old spinning set up from 1991 that might have 10 hours of use, until tonight.

tonight i bought a shimano symetre and after the unit was spooled and mounted on the rod i noticed that enless there was preasure pulling line tight on the bail line would just unwind right off the spool.

too much line maybe? normal until it gets use? 10 lbs test too big? i can see where this will be a pain every time i slack the line to straighten worms and such.

any ideas?

Sounds like too much line on the reel.  There should be at least an 1/8" lip of the spool remaining when it's fully spooled.  The type of line you have loaded might make a difference too.

Too much line on your reel. Like it has been said spool it 1/8 from the lip and you should be ok. If that is not the answer then try going down to 8# or even 6#. I use 8# Yo Zuri Hybrid on my Symetre and i never have that problem.

You might get away with 10 lb test line, depending on the brand,

but you definitely have too much line on the reel. If you want

to try the line you already have spooled, apply KVD Line & Lure

Conditioner which will help.

My suggestion is #6 Yo-Zuri Hybrid Ultra Soft (.010" diameter, 11.9 lb test).

what they said and use a line like cajun red cast or trilene xl both of which are limp.

I agree spool to full and using 10lb test on the 2500 (if that is your reel size) is at the high end of the reels line rating. I would drop down to 8 lb test or use a more flexible line maybe like XL, or even try a conditioner like the KVD conditioner.

Certainly spool overfilling can cause problems. You didn't mention what kind of line you're using or what size reel, but the line should be spinning-friendly, i.e., reasonably limp and easy-handling, and the pound test should be proportionate to the size of the spool.

i removed about 1/3 of the line. it was cheap BPS line they spool for free. one thing about this unit is im very impressed with the drag. the reel as a whole is very nice to use. still not very good at casting but with a lighter rod i think ill get better.
