I have a choice between a ML 1/8-5/8 or a M 1/4-3/4 for a cranking rod. Probably going to go with a Lighting Rod since I can pick up two for less than $80. Keep in mind I'm talking spinning for now. I was thinking ML for the softer action when dealing with treble hooks but the M will let me fish larger 3/4 oz. cranks and topwaters. Plus I really don't think the stiffness of  a M power spinning rod will be that big of a problem.

Any suggestions?

Wal Mart here has Lightning Rods on sale, the newer version for 9 bucks a rod! I bought a spinning version , for a back up.

definitely go for the M over the ML. i have a ML lightning rod and i use it as a crappie and trout rod. it is way too whippy for crankin' for bass.

Thanks Rod. I have a MH spinning and it is VERY stiff. It feels like a jackhammer in my hands when I'm using a spinnerbait. I didn't want a similar experience when Cranking.

I use a St. Croix AC70MM for cranks.  Eventually I'll add a MHM to the line up.  I can't think of many applications where a ML power rod would come into play.

If you like throwing cranks 1/4 oz or less, a ML would be ok. In the summer, you can use it as a dropshot rod. But baits over 1/4 oz, go with a M.

The AC70MM is a perfect rod for light and medium weight crankbaits.

I use two rods for my cranking.  For lightweight stuff and shallow divers, I use a G Loomis CBR781C (ML action, Mod-Fast) with a Curado100DSV and 10lb YoZuri Hybrid.  For medium and deep divers I also have a St.Croix Avid AC70MM with a Citica 100DSV and 10lb YoZuri Hybrid.  The ML power on the Loomis is great for shallow runners and square-bill cranks, but I've also run ShapRaps and Strike King Series 3s on it too, in a pinch.  The Mod-fast action keeps the fish on through all their struggling and head tossing.  The Avid performs just about as well, on deeper running baits.
