Replacing hooks.......what size?

Featured Replies

Never really thought about replacing trebles on my cranks. So I plan on doing it this year. But I'm so horribly new to this that I have no clue on sizes of hooks to order. What brands are really good for trebles? I'm an owner man but what about VMC? Maybe I can get some recommendations from the board. These are the baits that I want to change out.

2 - Rattletraps: both are 1/2 ounce sizes

1 - Bandit 100

1 - Rapala rattlin rapala. Very old hooks....really rusted. Think its the 3/8 ounce version.

Now you ask me about worm hooks and I know my stuff but never before have I even looked at trebles and how the sizes work. Thanks in advance!

Get yourself Owner ST-36 trebles size 4 and 6.

Thanks man.

Do you guys go with the red hooks or just stay with the normal colors of black and silver?

Many (all?) Lucky Craft and Rapala lures have VMC hooks. Gamakatsu and Owner are great hooks, too. Unless you have a specific reason for customizing a lure, replace hooks with the same size the lure came with. You can match them up by sight at the store.

Also, I find it MUCH easier to replace split rings rather than dealing with removal of hooks and replacement on the original rings. You can match them up by sight, too.

Nope no specific reason.

Good advice on the split rings. Thanks.

I like the Gammy round bends, and I always have size 2, 4 and 6 handy.

Don't just do your cranks.  I check the hooks on all my plugs and most times (not all :( ) I swap them out.

I don't catch a ton of fish, so when I get a hit I want the best chance to land the fish.  I believe good hooks give me that better chance.

kb here   i change all my crankbait hooks   i do put a red hook on the front  that is on size bigger   i use triple grip hooks  the only problem with some cranks  and adding a larger hook some times you will  lock hooks.  with me it was a pain now i watch before  the next cast.  i hate to waste a cast.   kb

Daiichi death traps! I have some of most brands and I like these the best.

PS- get some splitring pliers they will make life easier.

Like he said,a red hook on the front can make a bait look really cool.I wouldnt say red would be a recommendation, its a matter of preference.I have been using VMC Barbarian trebles, and they arent very expensive.Katsu round bends are great too.

Size 4 and 6 are the most common for almost all off bass fishing type plugs, with some exceptions for smaller baits.Like RW said you may want to get you some spilt rings also. Its usually a good thing to replace those altogether. Most plugs will take a size 2 ring, and 3's are just fine too.Get you a pair a split ring pliers for sure if you dont have them.I have lots of little holes in my fingers from trying to replace without a plier, its a real pain.
