I am currently picking out a Crankbait rod for large, deep diving baits (>15ft). This rod also has to do double-duty for Swimbaits up to 1 oz. I am reading different reviews about picking out one thats 7ft as opposed to 7'6. So I am asking, is there going to be much difference between the two lengths, or is it more personal preference?

the additional 6" should give you added distance on the cast. some people are even moving to 8-footers for this reason. however, in some cases as in the lamiglas skeet reese rods, the 7'6" model has a softer tip than the the 7'0" model. i have the both (well, i have the lamiglas XCF705R which is identical to the SR705R except for the color of the blank and shape of the handle) and like the 7'6" but i love the 7'0", especially for ripping lipless cranks. for DD cranks and hollow belly swimbaits, i prefer the 7'5" powell 754CB.

I have heard alot about the Loomis CBR 845 and 906, and thoughts on those rods for my application?

If you want to fish and not play, avoid the 7' rods.  They do not allow for a long enough cast.

7'6 and 7'10 (7'11) rods combined with the right line allow you to make very long casts.  Consequently, the deep diving bait will have more time at it's target depth.

I have the 7'3 Fenwick Crankshaft Rod and it is half glass and half graphite. It is a great rod for shallow and medium running crankbaits. Check them out! ;D

Burley, thanks for the diagram, that makes my decision a little easier. I will look at the rods over 7ft. It looks like a road trip to Cabelas or BPS to get a feel for them is in order. I have a good list and now gotta check them out.

That REVO add on diagram is funny. I have an old Abu Garcia RE3, and I was thinking of purchasing a REVO, but from some research, it seems that may not be the best choice in that price range. But that will come after the rod and the bank account gets a chance to recover. 8-)

Yes, definitely get a long rod. At least 7' 6". I have a 7'6" Co-Matrix and it is great for deep cranking.  I've used an 8' rod and it's even better. Basically, the longer, the better

I have the G Loomis CBR906.  An excellent rod.  My only complaint is that the butt section could be slightly longer.  Other than that, it is a great rod for what you are looking for.

I have the G Loomis CBR906. An excellent rod. My only complaint is that the butt section could be slightly longer. Other than that, it is a great rod for what you are looking for.

That is a problem with all longer rods.  I do not understand why manufacturers do not put a longer handle on 7'+ rods.

I ordered one last week.  I'm hoping it will be a decent rod, although I had to take two double shots of Glenlivet in order to pay that much for a Quantum rod.
