I want a special "frog and rat" setup and have asked some friends for suggestions.

One says to go with a 7-foot heavy with fast tip rod and a 5:1 reel.

Other friend says either a 6-6 or 7-foot medium heavy with medium action and a 6:3 or 7:1 reel.

Both are extremes so I am wondering what you guys would suggest.

IMO 7' heavy Fast with a 7:1 reel.

At least a 7' rod.

Never a 5:1 reel.

7' minimum length rod and need a bit of flex in tip, with a minimum of a 5 (or heavy) power rod. Tip to throw, backbone to handle hookset and fight. Braid 50 # if in heavy grass - no grass can go lighter on line #. 7:1 reel.

Rod choice also dictated by the size of frog or rat. A 6" rat isn't going to be the same as a Fleck's Flex Frog.

That said, for my "frog outfit" I use a 6'6" pos 8/14 med spinning rod with a cardinal 101 reel, 10# fireline, 20# leader and I pull them out of heavy weeds in my Florida canals.

It isn't the ratio, but inches per turn, which I pay zero attention to, I just reel faster or slower.

If I had to to winch them them in with 50# braid and drag their tails on the water surface I'd turn in my man card on the spot.

At least a 7ft MH with a 6.3 or 7.1 reel.

My preference is a 7'3'' MH with a fast tip, a 7:1 reel, 50# Sonic Braid. But any rod between 7 and 7'6'', MH-H, with a Fast tip would be fine, and never use 5:1 ratio.

i use my 7'XH CARROT STIX paired with a REVO SX 7.1:1 high speed reel with 30# power pro braid , i can pull ANY fish out of any slop. i used to use 50# power pro but found that a little overkill , now with the lighter line (30# vs 50#) i can get longer casts !!!

i use a 7' carrot stick also with a revo sx,and a 7'6" bps extreme with a abu garcia 5600 ext pro for my topwater and froggies.both great

I've had a few swimbait outfits through the years.  Without a doubt, the best setup is my current one.

Steez SVF Swimbait rod, paired with a JDM Zillion HLC and Samurai 70 lb braid.

My frog outfit: 6'9" MH zillion rod, 7.3:1 anniversary zillion, 50# braid.  I fish frogs quite a bit and this set up hasn't let me down yet.

I spent all of last season and what seems like my life saving looking for the perfect Frog setup but once I got the Powell 735 Frog rod the search was over. Team it with 40 to 65lb braid and a high speed reel and your search will be over.

Right now I have 3 frog rods on deck. The Dean Rod, a GL3 844c and this Powell rod. All are good for frogs but I like the action of the Powell the best. The Dean rod, of which the close minded will shoot down, there loss, is an excellent rod for Spro Frogs and Zoom toads also, The 844c is a good all around rod and the Powell just plain has the best action for walking the frog. All 3 can handle just about any frog situation one can encounter.

I use a loomis IMX904 paired with a curado 201e7 loaded with 50lb powerpro and so far this setup has worked great. Like others said, you'll be fine with any quality rod over 7ft with a good high speed reel.

    Mine frog setup is soon to be a Team Daiwa L & T frog rod.  I am going to get the 7'3" model and team it with 65 lb. Power Pro braided line.  For the reel I am going to get a Quantum Code Red in a 7.1:1 gear ratio.
