Daiwa Viento - going the way of the Dodo Bird

Just learned the Daiwa Viento has been discontinued (maybe not new news).  They are marked down at BPS to $169.   If you were thinking about buying one, now's the time.

The spool is pretty shallow.  I don't own one but I've heard it casts light baits exceptionally well.

didnt see that at BPS, is this instore?  wish I had gone today, I need a new spinning reel and would've like to pick up the Fuego.

I was in BPS today.  Didn't see any Viento's though I wasn't really looking..  I guess the twitching bar was the only thing that set that reel apart from the others.

Hmmmm.... Been looking into daiwas recently, got a few used ones on eBay for cheap, sol, fuego, and an alphas 103.  Might be a good chance to get a new one.  I'm still not sold on the twitchin bar though, may just save my money.

me either, neat idea but seems kinda cheap and like it always goes, the more things it has,the more for it to break.

I remember when they came out Raul and I both said they wouldn't last in the line-up. Guess Daiwa's gimmick reels didn't work out.....

Tight Lines!!

Didn't work for who?  I bet they sold over 80,000 of those reels.  I personally don't want one, but that reel was a huge success for them.

LOL that's funny 80,000 don't mean squat in this industry.

The Viento® is a gimmick just like the Megaforce® with Twitchin' Bar..

They were built with lazy anglers in mind... ;)

aww common rm you mean you dont want one to fish with?so you can use one hand all day and sit in your lawnchair and drink with the other hand,or do whatever else you do with your other hand ;D ;D

I'm sure I'm guessing on the light side with the 80,000 units, but that still means they would've done over $12 million.  I know that's not in a league with the Curado, but that's pretty good.

But to your point, I don't think they'll be doing many (or any) more reels with the twitchin' bar in the future.

The Twitchin Bar was one of the worst ideas I've ever experienced.

Agreed the twitching bar is a gimmick.  But the reel itself is apparently rock solid and a superb performer with really light baits.

12 million isn 't much these days, the company can easily pop a million just in the molds and tooling required to manufacture the reel.

1.  There are 2 applications people have found the twitching bar useful:

    a.  Frog fishing

    b.  Jig fishing

I don't know about America, but it doesn't take too much to order custom reels based upon an existing platform.  I'm sure there would be enough anglers to commission 500 or 1000.

I'm also guessing that retail pricing was used ot man cost. Thus it wouldn't be $12 million for Diawa. The retailers would have been 12mil but their costs would have been much higher.

I own one and like it just fine. I used it for pitchin' soft plastics. It would also match up great with a GLommis shakey head rod. There is nothing cheap about it, it is well built and will throw lighter baits.
