I have been looking at these rods and was just wondering how they compare to other rods in their price range. From what I've gathered they are great. What do you'll think?

I think the Avid rods are the best value in St Croix's line-up. They are light, crisp and sensitive. Quality componenets with excellent fit and finish.

I have two Avid spinning rods. I do not use either. I gave them to my wife. I find the handles to be way too small to be comfortable for anything other than short term use.

I have a 6'6" MLF Avid

The rod itself is great, light and sensitive, however I hate the reel seat.  It tightens on the reel from the bottom up and after an hour or 2 of casting the knob loosens.  Maybe it's just this one particular rod, but it's made me wary of the croix spinning rods or any rods that have reel seats similar.

Take it back to the retailer or send it back to St. Croix.

I have the same rod, so yours must be defective. Perhaps

just talking with St. Croix Customer Service can resolve

the issue, it could be something you have done. At any

rate, you can get this resolved without much or any cost.

I own a AVS68MXF...awesome rod, perfect for drop shot and shaky head. Stout enough to fish med -lt texas rig.

If you don't want to send it back, the fix is easy:

Unscrew the reel nut all of the way down. Get some teflon tape and wrap the threads tightly in a clockwise direction (if you wrap counter clockwise, the tape will unravel when you screw the nut back up)

The tape takes up the clearance between the threads and the nut (knob). As teflon tape has no adhesive, it can be removed whenever you want and won't leave any residue.

By the way, the reel seat components are made by Fuji, not St. Croix.

Great rods, sensitive, well worth the money IMO.

All in all I've owned 6 Premiers and 3 Avids and I'm a big fan of both. They are the best value I've owned and I think they are the best in their price class, especially the Premiers. However, aside from St. Croix, the only other nice setups I have are Loomis GL3, which are very nice but I'd rather have an Avid because I despise that plastic cap on the Loomis handles. I didn't feel the need to upgrade to the Avid on setups where sensitivity wasn't important and just mono/floro was used, such as for buzzers, topwater, and slip bobber walleye setups, so I kept my Premiers for those.

I especially like the Avid 70MHF casting rod for spinnerbaits. Its very crisp and I can feel em ticking the weedtops alot better than with the GL3 76MHF I previously used.

They are great rods.  My favorite is the AVS68MXF.

My next one will be AVS69MLXF for drop shotting.

The heavier rods are Fenwicks, but I'll probably swich ower to Avids in the future.
