SpinnerBait Rod Help

Featured Replies

I'm wanting to get a new rod/baitcaster combo and don't really know how to pick out my rod.  Right now both of my rods are 6'6 medium heavy with fast action tip.  When I use 3/8oz spinners on these it feels weird,  it bows the rod pretty bad and feels real heavy.

What type of rod would you suggest for a big spinner such as 3/8-1/2oz?

Something's wrong here. 3/8 - 1/2 oz is a "normal" lure weight.

There should be no issues fishing these weights on a MH rod.

:-?

6'6" MH is what my spinnerbait rod is.

I use a MH 6.5 or 7' for spinnerbaits and buzzbaits up to and including 3/8 oz.  I go to the H 7' for 1/2 oz and above.  It just feels better to me.

What rods are you using ? They should throw those baits with ease.

I throw spinners on a 6'8 MH and a 7' H depending on the situation.

What brand of rods are you using? One manufacturers MH can feel like anothers M. Also, what reel are you using (specifically what gear ratio)? Some older reels with high gear ratios (before high efficiency/oversized gears) make any resistance type lure seem "heavy". What types of blades are on your spinnerbaits? If they are colorado blades, that could be part of it too.

A 6' 6" MH should work fine.  I dont think you are using a normal MH.

I am using bps rods. They are im6 but I'll have to look at them tomorrow to get the actual model name.

I'm using a citica reel but it's not the new style citica. I'll have to check it to get the actual ratio as well.

Ratio on the older Citica is 5:1

Ratio on the older Citica is 5:1

not necessarily. the 200DPV was 5:1 but the 100DSV and 200D are 6.2:1.

to the OP, 6'6" to 7'0" MH with a F action is fine for spinnerbaits. are you fishing tip up or tip down?

When I say old, I don't mean the D or E. I mean the Bantam.

Thanks for the replies guys.

I fish spinnerbaits usually tip down.

I'm using a Citica 200d 6.2:1 ratio.

I have another baitcaster that is browning brand and its 6.2:1 also.
