Re: Tube, Tube, Tube.

Recommended Posts

I fish quite a few tubes and use spinning gear most of the time.  I use 4" tubes with 1/8 and 1/4 oz inserts.

For the 1/8 oz I use a Gloomis 6.6' MF

For the 1/4 oz I use a St. Croix 6.6' MF

Bass Pro Shops has good tubes for a good price. Since you're up north, 3-3.5 inch would be my choice for smallies.

I would use a 6'8" MXF

For you tube guys, is there a technical reason for using the shorter rods for tube fishing or is this a personal preference?

The rod I had in mind is a 7'6 M, Fast. The Johnny Morris elite with recoil guides. I have a 7'6 casting MH/XF I use for jigs. VERY underrated rods.

The other one I've been looking at is the Loomis Bronzeback 7'4 rod.

Well I started this topic not for rod advice, but for general tube fishing tips, techniques, links to articles etc.

I see it got moved to rods/reels etc.

So keep that in mind when posting. I'm not 'JUST' looking for rod recemendations.

What tubes are your favorite? Size tube heads-in what depth/current? Rattles? Techniques?

Links to articles?

These have caught me a ton of fish. The quality and price can't be touched.

I fish them on 1/8 to 1/4 tube jigs and because of the thick head I can rig them weedless on 3/0 Gammy EWG hooks when conditions call for weedless.

I throw them with spinning gear, a 6'6" Avid MF.

I primarily fish the BPS Tender Tubes with the BPS weedless tube jig in 3/16oz, the XPS comes in 1/4oz but is more expensive for 1 less jig, the cheaper ones do the trick. Sometimes I use a rattle, for the most part, I use the cheap Renegade Jig Rattles from Wal-Mart, they are cheap and get the job done. Glass tube rattles may produce a better sound but can be expensive.

I recently pieced together a tube/finesse setup from a Daiwa Alphas 103 and 7'M-XF Daiwa Zillion rod. I like a setup geared toward lighter baits for the majority of my tube fishing for casting reasons, both for ease and distance.  It's a great light weight setup that's light enough to throw smaller weights but the Zillion has the power when you need it.

As for fishing them, I usually use them where I would use a T-rigged worm, around light and sparse wooded cover, hard rocky bottoms where you would find craws, just about anywhere that the grass isn't too thick. I retrieve them by dragging like a worm with small hops, if you get hung in grass or on a rock, I'll shake it like a shaky head as is comes through or over giving the tentacles a little action and working the rattle. I've found most of the bites come on the fall, in deeper water, and then after you stop or shake it a few times.

I knew this would happen when this was moved here. This wasn't started looking for rod advice.

Thank you though. I started a new thread hopefully worded clearly enough to not give the impression I'm looking for rod advice.
