core vs pixy?

Recommended Posts

I don't really know much about the daiwa pixy. What is a good price for one and what would it take to make it a pixzilla?  Also, between the pixy and the shimano core, which would be better for fishing weightless plastics and maybe some texas rigged as well.

I own the Core 50 MG, don't own a Pixy but from eveything I've read and/or heard, the pixy would probably be better for weightless plastics.

The Pixy is the best at casting light lures on the market and would be best if you plan on throwing mostly weightless plastics. The Core 50 is no slouch either and throws weightless plastics well and texas rigs even better. The Pixy is a finesse reel so it has limited line capacity. A new one can cost anywhere from $290-$340, and lightly used ones can be had for $250-$280. A Pixilla is a Pixy with an aftermarket carbon fiber handle, new spool bearings, a drag upgrade, and a worm drive bearing to replace the busing.

Add the cost of those upgrades to the price of the reel and you could have easily purchased a reel almost capable of doing what the Pixy does plus some other goodies you will not get in a Pixy and will still end up with a reel with limited line capacity.

Don 't get me wrong, I 've got three Pixies and appreciate their qualities, but I 've got a bunch of reels so I can dedicate a reel specifically for lightweight baits, but, it 's not the kind of reel I would purchase if I were only to have a limited amount of reels.

If I were you I would look into the Core 50 Mg or a Steez, those can cast light baits, not as well as a Pixy but you can use them for a lot of different things while the Pixy ..... unless you are finesse aficionado ....

I was considering one of the reels mention to do just this, weightless. But like Raul said, to have one reel for one application with a limited amount of reels, what other alternatives are there? Sorry if Im jacking!

If thats the case then get a Core 50 MG, it will cast lightweight plastics and lures as well as perform very well with lots of other tackle.

If you like spinning gear, you might consider a mid to upscale spinning combo for weighless plastics.

I recently purchased a spinning reel and rod just for that purpose.

I am starting to get a lot more into baitcasters and want to start throwing light baits with one. Spinning reel wise, I've got a symetre and am looking into getting one of the new stradic c14 to replace that.  But I would really like to get a core or possibly steez. Just cant afford one new.  Have anything you'd like to get rid of steezy?

As a matter of fact I think Steezy does, actuallt I was hoping to grab some of his gear after X-Mas but things arent looking to good, but I sure like that Core :)

I'd be looking at the Core, Sol, or even the Steez 1st.  Availability is much better, US warranty, and price.  That said, if you were to go out, get a Pixy, and pay for the upgrades, I would say congrats.  A very cool little reel, if somewhat unpractical.  Then again, roughly 1/4 of my tackle isn't about practicality - I just got it because I wanted it.

;D

I sold my Core 100 a few days ago and thought I had my 6' GLX rod sold but buyer backed out.

I only have a G.Loomis CR723 GLX 6' MedHvy rod($230 shipped).

If you want to save some money, consider the

Curado 200E7. With a little shopping you should

find a NIB for +/- $150. This reel is comparable

to much higher priced Shimanos, both domestic

and JDM.

When you see my Steez reels forsale you will know that I have died. I think Charlton Heston said it best, "From My Cold Dead Hand".

As I said and I s*t you not guys, I LOVE my Pixies, you gotta have one to really appreciate them BUT, the reel as stock is only good for what it 's made for, the spool is for 6-8 lbs test, try spooling it with 10 lbs and you 'll end up with a purty short string, you can do all the upgrades you want but there 's no deeper spool upgrade possible. Turn it into a Pixzilla ? let 's do the math:

Basic Pixy, let 's say you purchase a used one in good condition, that pops 250 from your wallet, add the Pixzilla upgrade ( TDZ line guide, drag upgrade, worm drive, spool supporting bearings ) add another 100, now you want it to look cool, add the carbon handle upgrade, another 120, plus shippings and stuff, add another let 's say 50 bones:

250+100+120+50 = $520

That 's 40 dollars more than a Steez and you WON 'T HAVE:

Corrosion resitant bearings the Steez has as stock

Type R+ inductor

Clicking drag star

Clicking tension knob cap

4 extra inches in the IPT

Deeper spool

If what you are looking for is reel capable of casting light baits there are other better options for less money that will serve you well for doing so, leave the Pixy for the finesse aficionados that other reels to compensate the cost of owning a reel so bait/technique specific.

I'll bring up a reel most of you will automatically dismiss as junk because of the other reels being discussed.......

Strictly performance wise, you will NOT be dissapointed in the BPS Pro Lite Finesse.

They are not heavy, nice smooth drag very smooth, very compact, and best of all, for this application, the braking system is great. The reel can cast small weightless lures with ease.

I like it enough I might pick up another just to trick out, and put on a BCR 852.

Another option is the Daiwa Sol. This real is very good at tossing light baits, and is hard to beat for the price. You can find them around $200 on ebay.

co-sign.

plus, the Sol can have most of the same mods done to it the Pixys can have done.

I dont own a sol but have heard pretty good things about them for light lures and plastics. Yeah a Pixy or core 50mg or steez would be nice (a lot of $$) but lets not also forget about the shimano chronarch 50mg too!!! I have a steez 103ha and an Alphas type R and would put the 50mg up against either of those 2 for about half the price!!! So I guess it comes down to how much you want to spend

Exactly, that 's the point, as I said, there are other reels capable of doing finesse fishing for less money:

Domestic:

Daiwa Sol

Shimano Chronarch 50 Mg

Shimano Curado 100D

Import:

Daiwa Type F

Scorpion 1000/1001

Scorpion 1000/1001 Mg

All of those are in the 200 dollars price range, I don 't include the Alphas R edition nor the Alphas Itö because those cost well above $250. None of the list "needs" upgrades, the performance is right out of the box.
