Happy Holidays to all. Just wondering about an all purpose rod? At this point I'm not worried about price. Looking for something that handles plastics, spinnerbaits, cranks, topwater and jigs. I've heard g-loomis IMX is really good. Granted no one rod will perfectly fish all techniques, what do you think is the best all purpose rod out there?

MBR843C in the IMX or GLX WILL fish darn near every technique. I highly recommend this rod as an all purpose rod, especially if it is your first Loomis rod.

It handles T-rig, C-rig, top water, jerkbaits, small swim baits (lake fork shad), crank baits and spinnerbaits.

Some may say the 844 but I doubt you will find hardly anyone to disagree.

Don't be influenced by the price difference between the IMX and GLX.  I have 2 of the IMX and they are great.  I would go with the IMX.  Get the GLX if you're fishing mostly worms, but then I would recommend a different model for solely worm fishing.

Check the flea market on here. I would consider a good deal anywhere from $225-$260 shipped for any model GLX. Keep your eyes open bc they usually go fast.

Tackle Warehouse just had 20% off everything in stock, Give them a call and see if they will still honor it, they might.  You can find good deals on here but it may take a while to find the exact model you want.

MBR782c might work well for you.

I fully agree with the MBR843 IMX/GLX and also agree that it may be worth it to go with the IMX and save ~$100. Keep an eye on the flea market section of the forum, great deals on these rods often pop up. And don't be afraid to buy used rods from other members, especially those with the outstanding Loomis warranty. I picked up a used MBR843 GLX in "like new" condition for $275 in the flea market, $100 off retail for a new rod. It is a great all around fod for baits in the 1/4oz - 5/8oz range and I'm sure the IMX would be as well (I have an IMX spinning rod and love it).

I just took the plunge two weeks ago and bought my first (perhaps only) high-end rod. I wanted something versatile for the type of fishing that I do. I don't have any heavy cover in the waters I fish and I also like fishing smaller baits so I went with a medium-power rod instead of a medium-heavy. Based on some research, and a lot of recommendations on this site, I got a Loomis GLX MBR842C. I got it new from a seller on eBay for $279 shipped.

I have bought a couple GLX this year for +/- $250.

The MBR 842, 843 or 844 will work just fine for

your "all around" rod when one pops up in the

Flea Market.

I also have this one in the GLX, MBR842C.  This is one of three of my favorite Loomis rods out of the 9 or so I have.  I use #8 Yozuri mono on it.  BUT,imo, it is a little small for an all around rod like you want. 

am not one for bandwagons but, here i'm getting on the one that says loomis "3" power mbr for casting...sjr for spinning.

glx, if you can afford it...if not, you ain't backing up much with the imx.

If the you are looking for a 7 footer, I will second, fifth, twentieth, whatever the MBR843. BUT, my all-around-super-duper-magic-wand-do-it-all rod is my MBR783 IMX.

Thanks for the post - I may go with that if I ever decide to get another Loomis rod. On the Loomis web site, they make this comment about that rod:

MBR783C "....If we had to choose one casting rod for all of our fishing, the 783 would be our choice."

AND, I learned something new - I didn't even know that Loomis made 2-piece casting rods (which I like for travel when I can't have a 7' rod sticking from the trunk of my sedan, over the folded rear seat, all the way into the front seat area) ;D

The 783C has been my all-round, all-purpose rod for years and years.  It's extremely versatile.

One thing I've noticed is that tall guys like longer rods. I'm 5' 8", so a 783 is a comfortable fit. If you're over 6', then you might like the 843 better.
