Unused Floro-Mono on reel - good next year??

Featured Replies

Hi all,

Last year I spooled all my rods and ended up not using two that now have full spools of Florocarbon and Mono.  Are they good for next year? :-[

I've done it. I guess it depends on where they were stored, and how much you actually used them. Just shoot 'em with some Line and Lure, and run it! Then if you end up having an issue, it's no biggie to respool.

Fluorocarbon is an inert crystal.

Unused, the line will last indefinitely.

Monofilament is basically nylon. If

kept away from sunlight and away

from heat, it can be stored for a long

time. However, most guys aren't comfortable

with old line and I would replace the mono

for sure.

Merry Christmas!

The only problem I see is memory/coiling problems from sitting a long time. That can be fixed by trailing it out behind the boat or walking it out in the yard to relax it.

I generally keep my spools filled halfway with 'old' mono as you rarely get down that far in most fishing situations. This makes new spools of line last twice as long for me as I'm not filling an entire spool.

Mono is cheap, replace it. Now is a good time of year to scout out clearance line from stores. I found Sufix mono at Wally World for $5 for a 330 yd.spool.

I would re-spool, I hate when i lose a $10-50 crank bait to line failure. You could probably get away with it,I think it is to risky. just my $.02.

8-) Thanks for all the posts, think I'll change the Mono and see what happens with the Floro.  The rods have been stored in a cool basement on a rack (no sun / heat) so we'll see.

Thanks again to everyone

Agree on all points. Good post ;D

Not sure about other lines but I've used Fish307.com to buy Y/Z Hybrid with good success. Good prices fast shipping and frequent updates.

Mine gets stored in my house in one of the spare bedrooms(out of sunlight and extreme temps).I spray a little reel magic on the night before.I never had a problem. My reels usually sit for 3-5 months unused with line on them.

However i do like to cast in the back yard the day before a fishing trip to make sure it won't give me any problems. If it does I'll simply change the line.
