I had planned on going up to Lake Champlain in early November. All my rigs were set and ready to go, but the trip was canceled due to bad weather. I respooled some of my reels for that trip. Should I respool for the first outing this spring? Some of that flourocarbon gets expensive. If I chose not to respool, what are some suggestions to make sure my line is in good shape for the spring. I would hate to have some early spring break-offs b/c of bad line.

Just treat the spools with KVD Line & Lure, and fish them in spring.

Fluorocarbon will last indefinitely, but storage

results in a lot of coiling and memory. I suggest

trolling your line to straighten it out. You will

be good-to-go!

Excellent. What's the best way to troll your line out? For instance, do you use a float at the end of your line ? How far is far enough? Do you run it through a towel doused in conditioner when bringing it back in? Will other boat wakes affect this technique?

No weight, let it all out, but not quite to the knot!

Troll a couple of minutes , then bring in half and

troll another minute. Reel in another half and troll

another minute.

every 20 cranks or so. If you can let it set for awhile,

the absorption will be better.

in the past I have run the line through a towel.  Should I just spray the conditioner directly to the spool after 20 or so cranks?  Then let it be for the day? half a day? hour?

I do both.

If mono hasn't been exposed to excessive UV or heat and hasn't been fished, it should be in the same state as a fresh line, except for the memory.  You can take the memory out by pulling a long cast's worth of line off the reel and stretching it moderately.  I keep fluorocarbon spooled until the level on the reel gets lower than I consider "OK" for casting efficiency.  It's unaffected by UV light, doesn't absorb water and will maintain it's physical qualities almost indefinitely.  I examine it carefully for damage and cut 6-8 ft off the end after fishing it to make sure it's all good.  I'll change it out if I've had a "professional overrun" and the line was kinked anywhere along its length.  But of course that never happens :

Thanks for the info guys. Interesting tips to keep line quality. I normally re-spool every three months, but i'll try the conditioner!

good tip!.. i also do this, except i tie a swivel on to the end of it.. it unwinds and straightens out pretty good like this..
