Curado E5 help...

Recommended Posts

Bought a Curado E5 last year based on good reviews.  I'm typically strictly a Quantum guy but heard good things on this for cranking so i thought i'd give it a shot.  I only really do shallow cranking 10 ft or less w/ square bills and lipless baits.  Not sure but I'm just not sure it feels right for the application I'm using cause of the gear ratio.  Maybe i need to give it more time and adjust.  Am I wrong?

I use an E7 for those apps. Jerkbait too. If you feel it is too slow you can get replacement gears for 7 speed. There are few threads about that here.

Will the 7.0 gears fit inside the gearbox of an E5??  I haven't compared them but I always figured the gearbox was sized appropriate to just what would fit inside it with not much extra space.

I use my E5 as my deep crank reel, for anything under 12ft I use a Daiwa Sol.  For lipless I use a higher speed reel, E7, Zillion SHA, Patriarch 64LP, anything on the MH-H rod I am not using at the time for something else.

the reel isnt doing anything wrong, just feels like i have to work alot harder to get the shallow baits to work.  Which i know is supposed to happen because of the gear ratio, just never tried one, tryin to get some opinions

Well, the reel is designed for slow, big and

deep cranking. You bought the wrong reel.

The E7 is the one you need. Put it up for

trade on our Flea Market, you might find

someone interested in an even swap.

I used a E5 last year for all trebles. I found it way too slow so i upgraded to a core 50. It is a 7.0 but its IPT is 28 so it is a slow 7.0. Used it a coupe times so far and i love it. You would be much better with a E7

If I can rephrase your question. -  Should I be using a 5-1 reel for square lip crankbaits and lipless cranks?

One of the reasons I bought the 200E5 was to fish lipless cranks slow (and swimbaits) .   I know that's unusual but  it's what I wanted to do.  When I get a couple of bites,  It's real hard for me to slow down.   I've got plenty of fast reels but the E5 definitely has a place in my arsenal.

5-1 may be too slow for crashing  a square bill into stuff but I don't know.   It might help picking your way through stuff but I'm not a crankbait expert.  It is  too slow  to rip a rattletrap over grass.

If you don't like it, you don't like it.   Bill Dance said "Confidence is the best tool in your tacklebox".  Change something (balsa vs. plastic)(reel ratio) if you're not comfortable with your set-up.
