Round reel vs. low-profile reel

Featured Replies

hey im just trying to fgure out does it matter either or. I know that round reel holds more line but what is its major purpose this may sound like a stupid statement but im just wanting to know is there any difference in performance between an abu ambassador and a extreme just to give an example

Round reel will hold more line it also has a lower gear ratio and there usually very duarable. On the down side they can be pretty big and the low profile are nice and small and easy to palm.

so would it work well for crankbaits on a crankin stick ?

A lot of people do use them for crankin. Because of the low gear ratio it makes it easier to slow reel a crank or swimbait.

Round reels are simply built with more strength.  They come in many different line capacities, and retrieve speeds.  Most 200 size reels run around 28 IPT, which isn't what I'd call slow, and 120 yards of 14# mono isn't what I'd call high capacity either.  They are easier to service, and typically more durable.

I like round reels better than low profiles for several purposes

and techniques. I have three: CTE200GT for deep diving

crankbaits; CTE100GT for weighted soft plastics; CTE200GT

for my striper rig.

8-)

The only other thing I may add is other than a couple 50 and 100 series shimanos, most round reels have heavier spools and dont handle lighter baits that great.

round reels...built like a tank...

the CTE100 Calcutta's are very nice and small... and I really don't like a lot of line capacity...

i like my low pros but when it comes to dependable  round rules ..like i said in a post long ago in a survival situaition give me my 4600 c3 and ill never starve

Round Shimano Calcuttas are built like tanks BUT that is brand and model specific, not an inherent design characteristic.  There is no engineering reason that a low profile reel can't be just as tough or a round reel a wimp.  Gear ratios are gear ratios.  Any reel can have high or low ratio.  Any reel can have a low or high capacity spool.  Low profile reels are more comfortable to palm for most guys and their spools are more accessible, so its easier to pick out backlashes.  I use both types but it's based on gear ratio, line capacity, how they handle line, and what weight they are comfortable throwing - not the shape.  JMHO

i got one for fishing heavy slop and swimbaits. i got it because i knew all my low pros could not handle heavy swimbaits and punch rigs. its a quantum iron and it is beat to #e!! and still cranks good works every time i use it

Whenever you need heavier line and higher capacity, that's when you use one.

As BobP stated there is no engineering reason why a low profile reel can't be just as tough as a round or a round reel just as wimpy as a low profile. Gear ratios of various sizes can be had on either as  can line capacity.

I grew up fishing Penn reels & Abu Garcia 5000s so I'm accustomed how round reels feel in my hands so I own 6 Shimano round reels.
