pflueger sticking

Featured Replies

hey all, i have a pflueger baitcasting reel that i bought a year ago. it casts smooth and reals in smooth until i get to far right on the spool and it sticks for a crank or two then goes back to normal. any ideas on what i could do? tia

I have a couple of pfluegers that had some similar problems.  What I narrowed it down to, I think, is that the the outside housing for the worm gear got too dry.  The line guide started to hang up, and was worse going in one direction than the other.  Water splashing on the reel from the line seemed to make it worse, maybe because it washes off the oil??? After having someone look at it, I was told there wasn't anything wrong, just to keep it oiled.

I did a lot of research on the internet to figure out what was going on and found that a lot of people were having problems with pflueger reels.

Good luck.

you have dirt in the levelwind keeping it from moving all the way over so it binds.

Deep clean the reel every season, and, this will not happen...

Tight Lines!

I cleaned a friend's Bass Pro Shops Extreme (similar to Pflueger reels, made by them actually) that did this and it had dirt actually on the inside of the levelwind pawl (little part that rides in the groove of the levelwind worm gear).  I had to remove the cap holding it in, pull the pin out and clean all parts thoroughly.  This is no easy task, the reel must be virtually completely disassembled to get to it since the nose piece has to come off to get to the cap and unscrew it and a lot of other parts are removed prior to getting to the screws holding it on.  I had the entire reel apart anyway doing a cleaning on it so it was easier.  It probably needs done anyway so sounds to me like it's time for a complete teardown and clean/relube.

If you have aprehension about tearing down the reel, our service costs $16.20 for members ($18-10%). If you decide to DIY, make sure to have a schematic in front of you and document your progress with photos.

You probably need a new pawl and worm gear.  Have DVT replace these parts for you.

my pflueger echlon has this problem as well i usualy just blow it out with a air gun and oil it up it usualy lasts half a season and i fish every single day from when the ice thaws till its iced up again. i just blow em out and oil them during season and it fixes the problem. i'll do a complete tear down and respool all my reels after a good cleaning and lube job every winter
