Tips for the basic reel maintenance?

Featured Replies

until this winter ive never maintained any of my reels, shame on me as I continually educate my customers that the number one cause for mechanical failure is lack of maintenance. Can someone go over some pointers on the proper way of maintaining spinning and baitcasting reels? I think im ok with the spinning reels - I have a stradic and I just remove the oil port screw on the side of the reel and add a few drops of the lubricant that was provided with the reel. As for baitcasters, im not exactly sure of the oil points, i dont want to go too crazy for now but id like to know some measures that will go a long way if someone would be kind enough to give me the run over.

RM, did you ever consider doing a manual for servicing spinning reels as well?

Spinning reel engineering varies drastically from manufacturer to manufacturer, and even model to model from the same company. About the only things any two have in common, is removing the spool, and removing the handle, and even that has variations, LOL.

They are just too complicated.

I'm not a fan of the lube port. The best way to lube something is to disassemble, clean and relube.

I think Jfrancho's point can apply to baitcasters to some degree as well. Although to a large extent they share basic engineering, there are plenty of "Gotch ya's" that are unique to certain models and brands.
