Can someone recommend a quality spincast reel?

Featured Replies

I've tried a lot of reels, nearly everything by Zebco, and have come to conclude that I hate their products. Don't like Shakespeare much either. I'm looking for a reel that is quiet (won't grind upon retrieve), retrieves smoothly, and can cast long distances. Maybe Diawa, are they any good? What do you recommend?

Out of curiosity why do you want a spincaster? I only see disadvantages in using one. I'd go with a spinning reel they are much more reliable and are very simple to use.

I could never get the hang of how to use them. The line always gets all tangled up. Do you know how I could eliminate that? I would like to start using them.

Have you tried the Zebco Omega??? For a spincaster, it is pretty nice. However, it is a heavy reel. It is smooth on the retrieve, casts nicely, and seems to built well.

Yes, I actually got it yesterday, and didn't like it, mainly for the fact that it was too heavy. So I'm going to return it to Bass Pro, and look into something else. Maybe the Daiwa Goldcast.

Get yourself an open face reel and learn to use it correctly and you'll wonder why you were using the kiddie reel.

get yourself a spinning reel. you will be glad you did. its not hard to get the hang of.

check out shimano, daiwa or pflueger reels. 2500 size.

I just can't see the words "quality" and "spincast" being used in the same sentence.

Just kind of an oxymoron  :D  LOL

Daiwa Goldcast.

This.^^ If you gotta have a spincaster, the Goldcast is about as good as it gets.

The reason for all the tangles is you have too much line on the reel. If you take off some line it should help you out. Follow the guide on the side of your reel for what lbs line and how much. Hope this helps

Start with a decent spinning reel in 2500 size and your favorite 6 lb mono. Braid is even better- no memory- but expensive. Put it on the reel the right way. The direction in which the line is spooled should be the way it goes into the reel. Make your cast, close the bail by hand and retrieve.

P.S. Make sure the rod loads up on the cast.

My father would only use spincast reels, I tried to get him to use spinning reels, but he wasn't having it. I got him a Daiwa Goldcast one year and it turned out to be one smooth but tough reel. I knew it was a tough reel when I saw him rinse it off in creek water and it kept ticking.

The Abumatic is a fine spincast reel. I went through a few Zebco and Shakespeare reels before settling on the Abumatic for kids and non-fishing friends to use. Never had a problem with the three that I have.

Thanks for the replies everyone. I am going to look into the Goldcast and Abumatic. I'm really interested in the Goldcast thought, but what is the clicking noise that it makes that everyone is talking bout?

You will have trouble with ANY spincast if you reel it in with no weight and slack in your line. The line gets all wadded up on the spool. I try to teach my wife and others to pinch the line between her fingers as she reels in...also cleans off the gunk. I even do this with my baitcasters when the cotton woods are in bloom or the duck weed is bad....
