So Yall Want To Learn Toledo Bend?

Featured Replies

I haven't been able to go back to the lake but after researching it I believe it's starter connection. Yamaha says their starters do not go out very often. So I'm going to oil it up, tighten it up and if still clicking then I'll rplace the relay. I'm fixing to work straight through for several months so hopefully I'll get back up there to fix her up before I can not get away.

I thought it would be appropriate to bump this thread after hearing the bad news of @Catt's passing.  I don't fish Toledo Bend but this is a very interesting read for anyone.  I know Tommy took a lot

B&G, my Acme Mapper aint working, use Hook n Look Map

Catt, I don't have my map handy.  I'll try to get it later today.

A question:  Are big fish usually solo?  For instance, if I caught a 9-10 pound fish in a spot. Are there other big fish in that area?  Any other fish in the area?   Or does really depend on time of the year (like spawn, etc).  In your opinion, what is the significance of the area in which you caught the big one?  Does it mean that there will be fish there tomorrow? Is it an area that you return to frequently/yearly? Or do you think its just a matter of being in the right place at the time?

BnG, I'm fishing some of the same areas for 42 yrs now!

The best big bass days were 3 double DDs in one day off the same structure & a 35# tournament limit caught on 2 structures in less the 2 hrs.

If you catch a big fish somewhere, there was a reason she was there.  Big fish tend to be just outside the schools of quality fish.  For instance, a couple weeks ago when I caught 26.5lbs, I caught 4 of my fish (all 4lb fish) in one area, then motored about 100 yards and caught the 10.2.  Places that you catch big fish will replenish, just not as quickly as places that hold big schools of fish.  The will normally replenish with another big fish.  Last year I caught close to 10 fish over 7lbs in the same area over one months time.

I'm seldom more than 50-75 yds of a creek/river channel, I will be on a breakline or within casting distance of it. Breakline: outside grass, brush, or timber line, I only pay attention to the inside breakline during the spawn.

Could definitely be the relay also I did not think of that.  I had much the same thing happen to me recently with my trim down.  I would hit the switch multiple times and it would click and do nothing.  Replacing the relay was the ticket.

Well I couldnt bring boat up lower unit was leaking oil, came up any way my buddy has his boat and needed a partner.lol

gona go fight they people.lol

I have a little question for the married anglers.. What is the best approach to balancing work & fishing and still have quality time with a non fishing wife? Is there anything near Toledo that she could have fun doing while I search for my next lunker? She only can stand a few hours at a time on the water and gets board at the lake house.

Get her a kayak or stand up paddle board if she enjoys that. A stealthy way to photograph wildlife. My better half spends a lot of time in hers in San Miguel.

Thats not a bad idea.. We did paddle board on our honey moon and she seemed to enjoy it. And there is lots of beautiful sights on Toledo to capture on camera. I'll plant the seed and see if it grows. Thanks

You're welcome. I fished out of my kayak when the lake was @ 159'. Had a blast on a couple humps not far from the camp.

Good Question ATX.

My wife comes with me a lot.

She's a photographer, so being on the water lends many opportunities to capturing some really great views of the scenery on and around the water.

She's a heck of a fisherman too......

The compromise is I put the rod down every once and  a while and make sure I take her to some spots for her to be able feed her hobby.

So taking her with me and participating in what she does........goes a LONG way......

Just my 2 cents.....

Great advice!!!

I talked to her last night and she thinks she could get into that but wanted me to rig her up an umbrella to help with the summer heat. I have one that came with patio furniture that we never use so I should be able to mount it somehow to the back pedestal pole. Thanks for the advise guys. She doesn't complain but I can see when she's had enough, just want to keep her happy so it never becomes a problem.

Late report

Fished last Thursday and Friday in housen and six mile and caught about 20 both days. Thursday had about 16 lbs and Friday had about 18 lbs.

Caught everything in 4 to 10 fow. All on senkos without a weight. Couldn't catch em on anything else. Saw a little bedding activity but not as much as everyone else.

Hello everyone!!

I have been reading this forum now for about a year on and off. I want to say thank you first to everyone that shares info here you can not find many places with this kind of info about one lake. I have a lot more study and reading to do on this thread but will continue to do just that and I hope guys like Catt and the rest keep up with the great info...... I will be making a trip this weekend Friday-Sunday to the bend and I'm so pumped. I only get to fish the bend 1-4 times a year with 4 being a good year LOL!!!! Last year on March 16th I caught my personal best ever in the big bass cove 8.75# so really looking forward to this weekend..... This trip I will be staying around the 1215 area just south of N. Toledo state park. Looking at a HNL map I am just a little farther south of the driftwood motel and landing....... I am not at all familiar with this area and any advice would be greatly appreciated!!

FLW update on Toledo.

Well guys I ended up in 15th place on the old Bend.  She was good to me Thursday, but difficult on Friday, missed the top ten cut by 3 pounds.  Had over 18 on Thursday and was sitting in 7th place after day one and then had 14+ on Friday.  I ran a lot of water on Thursday and Friday.

That cool front that blew threw on Tuesday and into Wednesday had all the bed fisherman scrambling on Thursday except for a few.  As I stated it was a cool front and not a cold front, so during the evening of Thursday and clear night they moved shallow and it was a bed fisherman's day.  29+ was brought to the scales on Friday.  I fished my butt off, can't wait to get back.

If you are on the bed this week, you better be shallow because that is where they are now.

Congrats on a good finish Don. Did u bed fish?

If Momma aint happy, aint nobody happy!

Carol likes to sit on the back deck & read, she gets mad cause I tell her I just bring her for her limit!

I did not bed fish, that is one of my weakness' due to the fact that I am not able to have the opportunity to do it when it happens, so I fished my strengths.

Interesting thing though, is that the entire top 10 field were bed fishing and I know 3 that were not in the top 10 ahead of me were bed fishing as well.  So to do what I did without bed fishing is pretty darn good.

But I need to go bed fish.  I wish I could be there this week, because it would not matter if it was a 1lb fish or a 10lb fish, I would go by hundreds of white and pink baits and get after it.
