kleinlures
Like most people, I think of fishing some of the much hyped bass lakes in Mexico, el salto, lake baccarac, lake huites. I know the cost is significant, but I'd still like to know what others think. How do you choose a lodge if you've never been. One of my problems is that it is difficult to find someone that is willing to spend that amount of money for this type of trip when you need at least 2 people to begin to get a reasonable rate.. How do I locate someone willing/ interested in going on a bass trip of a lifetime? Though I don't consider myself a great bass fisherman, I can hold my own. I've fished canada a number of times, done well, but want to add this to my list of fishing destinations. Thoughts, recommendations, info would be greatly appreciated. :-/ :-/

You can always ask and if you can ask to a guy that lives in Mexico even better ( just like me ) One of my problems is that it is difficult to find someone that is willing to spend that amount of money for this type of trip when you need at least 2 people to begin to get a reasonable rate.. How do I locate someone willing/ interested in going on a bass trip of a lifetime? Can 't help you there. Though I don't consider myself a great bass fisherman, I can hold my own. I've fished canada a number of times, done well, but want to add this to my list of fishing destinations. Thoughts, recommendations, info would be greatly appreciated. :-/ :-/ Depends greatly on what you want to fish for, if I were to go and try to catch me a fish of a lifetime the places I would go are limited to two lakes in particular: Baccarac and Sugar Lake, for those looking to catch a 10 pounder there are a lot of options, El Salto, Huites, Vicente Guerrero, Aguamilpa are some of them. A 10 pounder may impress you and many others, for us who live in the country and have fished many of those lakes a 10 pounder is a nice catch but ....... there a lot of places where you can catch one and most of them are just a cast away. If you are looking for the big fish it 's better to do it when the chances of catching one are in your favor , those chances happen during a narrow window of time when: 1.- The fish are about to spawn 2.- The water levels of the lake are relatively low due to the winter drought and the drawing the water from the lakes for irrigation purposes 3.- You don 't get cooked in the process The three happen during February until mid March in those lakes. Once those three conditions have passed away the chances of you catching a really big un diminish greatly. It happens that during the month of July some lakes are lower in level but the catch is, it doesn 't always happens, it depends on how much it rained the year before and if the rainy season began in May. If it rained heavily the previous year most likely the lake is almost full, if the rains begin in May then the lake will remain and increase it 's level because water in not being drawn from it to irrigate crops. Jay_G
Raul, from past posts, I know you are fond of Baccarac. I've been watching the reports on Comedero and they have seemingly gotten better the last two years. I made an assumption that Comedero may peak this year or next and scheduled a trip there in 02/08. Have you fished it in recent years and if so, your opinion on Comedero. I will probably hit Baccarac in June.
Super User Raul Posted December 4, 2007 Super User Share Posted December 4, 2007 I 'm not fond to Baccarac, I 'realistic about it. The Mexican-Latinoamerican record of LMB came from Baccarac, a couple of years ago an American citizen landed a 19.19 pounder out of Baccarac, people who have dived in Baccarac have said there are huge fish in there, a person known of mine caught an 18.3 pounder out of it. There 's a story circling around that a person caught a 11 kilos bass ( 24 + lbs ) in Baccarac and because of being ignorant never submitted the fish for WR because he thought the WR was 22 Kilos, not 22 pounds and between a kilo and a pound there 's a huge difference. Comedero is a nice lake, lots of fish, some up to 12 pounds, so is Huites ( it 's like fishing Zimapán but with bigger fish ) but Baccarac and Sugar Lake are another world. If I were to go on the hunt to break my PB I would go either to Bacurato or El Azúcar for shure, the catch here is this, I caught my PB ( 13.86 lbs ) at Xicotencatl when there were big fish in Xico but if I 'm going to break my PB I want to do it big time by several pounds, if all what mattered to me would be to catch me a 10 pounder then why should I travel all the way up to either lake when I can catch a 10+ pounder 2 hours away from my hometown at either La Pólvora or Calderón ? 10-13 pounders are not uncommon in either lake. Duma
I just returned from Mexico and fished two days up at El Salto. The fishing was good but no trophies were caught unfortunately. The first day I caught a couple 4 lber's and lost a 6 and the second day my best was a touch under 4 lbs. Overall good, but still dissapointing for a lake like El Salto. The tilapia fishermen have nets out apparently 10 days on and 10 days off and many times the bass are temporarily sequestered and sometimes even killed (my second day the nets were everywhere) . This, not fishing pressure, I believe has put a damper on things if anything. This is definitely still a trophy fishery though. The impression I got is that Comedero is actually a better lake for trophies now, but due to the dangers (bandits, lawlessness, etc) there are only a few operations being run up there. I've heard from numerous sources that Comedero is the most underrated lake in Mexico....and these have been native Mexicans telling me this. My friend returned last week and did pretty well. I never have caught many big fish this time of year in Mexico. My bigger bass have always been June and July. Duma
One of the better known camps....I'm going back in April or May...I'm guessing that might be a better time to catch the biggun's..?

Jay_G
If your only two choices are April or May, choose May. The lower the water, the better your chance at El Grande!
Super User roadwarrior Posted December 18, 2007 Super User Share Posted December 18, 2007 Always hard to tell from a picture, but I would say either side of 4 lbs. That's a great pic!
