A World of Bass

Ok let's say there are like 198 countries in the whole world !!

Ever wonder how many of them do have bass populations ?

Of course I don't know it !

Here are the countries where I know catches of Bass have been documented .... (You can add yours if it's missing) !

Then we can see that the Bass really is a "Global" fish.

So the fish we're after is the Largemouth Bass (either Micropterus Salmoides Salmoides, or Micropterus Salmoides Floridanus) :

Austria

Bosnia

Brazil

Canada

China

Croatia

Cuba

Cyprus

France

Guatemala

Honduras

Hungary

Italy

Japan

Madagascar

Mexico

Morocco

Philippines (The)

Portugal

South Africa

South Korea

Spain

Switzerland

United States (The)

Vietnam

Zimbabwe

For now that is : 26 / 198 ..... ~13.1 %

PS: Go ahead, I'll add the new ones !

Kalifornia ;)

Oops and I almost forgot to put "the Republic of Texas" in the list 8-)

@ T-Rig : Thx for the participation !

Honduras, I knew but wasn't 100%sure ! Just cheched, seems like Lake Yojoa is a good spot ...

Honduras can enter the list !

Guatemala and Lake Atitlan too

As for Honduras I know they have the Rainbow Bass, aka the guapote but that's a cichild. But found bothing about Largemouth bass (specific info on that T-rig ?)

Colombia..... nothing relevant either ?

Anybody from South America, with an extensive knowledge of fish populations in south american coutries on the forum ?

To be very clear : I am only looking for countries were bass thrive in the wild. Of course B.A.S.S ESPN already made some research on that particular issue... http://sports.espn.go.com/outdoors/general/columns/story?columnist=sutton_keith&page=g_col_Sutton_largemouth-distributionbut then again they say Moncoutant in France is a bass fishing haven ;) ! Yeah right

So just the countries with an established population (even a tiny one) ! But no country with elusive stocking history from the late 18th century ::( !

If you can post a bass caught in the country (even dinks) then go ahead.

I lived in China for a few years and I came to a pond where a group of anglers were float fishing with bait. I inquired how the fishing was in my toneless Mandarin and a women pointed to the water emphatically and repeated "Bigmouth! Bigmouth!" I wasn't sure what her meaning was.

A while later I was in a fish market and lo and behold there was a tank of largemouths. Now you have to realize, in much of China, and especially in the south there are practically few "wild" freshwater lakes anymore. Angling is very different there too, although that is likely to change as the country develops. There are many man-made ponds that exist for fish farming and so, obviously, some are dedicated to largemouth bass.

There was a fish pond behind my apartment that was a piranha pond (common in the fish markets) and it was amazing to see the carnage as schools of piranha swept into schools of baitfish. Scary! And my arm would start making a reflexive casting motion LOL.

I already knew that this is possible to order live bass to eat in some chinese restaurants.

But what you're saying is that there are also various possibilities to actually fish for bass in China (even if it is in man-made square artificial ponds).

I guess sport angling is bound for huge growth in the coming years in China. The next big market !

Anyway, I guess China makes it to the list !

Glad you're back! I was thinking about you the other day and worried that maybe someone saw you fishing where the folks aren't quite as enthusiastic about wetting a line as we are :-/ ;)...

Thank you Skillet, Nice of you !

"saw you fishing where the folks aren't quite as enthusiastic about wetting a line as we are."

Do you mean the Versailles Palace again ? Well I gave up on that spot, that was a one-time trip.... just for a bet with a friend.

The water there is now covered with weed... not worth it !

It would be way too hard to sneak into the palace garden with my Frog set-up, although I reckon a picture of a fish caught on a Frog in front of the versailles palace would have looked reeeeally french  ;).

I'm back to normal everyday waters fishing.
