problems with snap swivels

Featured Replies

hello guys.. Dont know if there was a topic on this one but anyways...

I have a problem with snap swivels, I tried several brands sizes and types but none has ever satisfied me.. An 8 pounder broke me a snap swivel 2 days ago and im still ticked off, while at sea spinning i get this problem more often..

What do you use? are you satisfied? What do you guys suggest?? :-/

Tight lines

Use the snaps and you won't have any more problems. Just remember to re-tie occasionally.

im not a fan of swivels anymore.  it takes less then 2 minutes to tie the line and the benefits are worth it.  nothings worse then your knot staying tied to the swivel and you lose the fish because your swivel broke.  take the extra time and land more fish

That therein lies the crux of your problem and I too have experienced snap swivel failure.

Simply put, swivel snaps are just not reliable unless you're tagetting smaller fish, but even then I don't trust them. I used to used them until I realized that they were costing me.  The only time I use them is when I am field testing the inline spinners that I make or when I am drift fishing to salmon. In the latter they are used to hold lead and they aren't a part of the fish catching equation.

The duo lock snap suggested is an excellent option.  I subscribe to direct tying when possible.  I have used the snaps (not swivel snaps) with great success and they have been reliable. They will also make it easier to "walk the dog" too.

They seem like a time saver so I tried em once, but didn't like 'em. I didn't trust them on a big fish and I thought the snap might mess up the bait's action. So I dumped 'em.

Why you have problems with snaps ?

Some problems can be blamed on the tackle, others and you may not like what you are going to hear are nothing but YOUR fault:

1.- you purchase EL CHEAPO

2.- you don 't get the right one in either size or wire thickness

3.- you are lazy and never even bother to check the line above the snap for nicks, cuts, abrassion and wear

4.- dude, you don 't even know how to tie a good knot

5.- your line is s*ty

and so on

The devil is in the details.

Do I use snaps ?

Yes I do, even more, some baits do need a snap and others not only need a snap but a snap-swivel combination like in-line spinners.

Still not that old but showing signs of grumpiness.  ;)

Welcome to the forum ;)

As a rule-of-thumb I use as little hardware as possible in both freshwater and saltwater.

Nothing comes through nasty weeds better than a plain line and a tiny knot.

Hardware gives the line one more place to wrap around, it increases water resistance, it's a horrific weed catcher and after protracted use,

the wire will ultimately test lower in strength than the line. Even triple-tempered spring steel becomes work-hardened over time

because continual flexing crystallizes the molecules which causes brittleness.

All that said, for rigging Carolina-style a barrel-swivel is needed (#10 Spro).

When there's a lot of lure switching, it's nice to exploit the quick-change convenience of a "coastlock snap".

Where lure rotation in involved, a "ball-bearing swivel" can be a godsend to prevent ugly line-twisting.

Nonetheless, I've never found the need to use them both together (snap-swivel).
